Virginia Hosts Virginia Tech Sunday in the Commonwealth Clash

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (7-10, 2-4 ACC) takes on Virginia Tech (12-4, 2-3 ACC) on Sunday, January 19 at 3 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. The game is a Commonwealth Clash contest and will also include a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
 
BROADCAST INFORMATION

  • The game will be televised on the ACC Network and will stream online through ACCNX. ACCNX streams are available through participating TV providers that carry ACCN and can be watched on the ESPN app and through WacthESPN. Sam Ravetch will call the play-by-play with UVA alumna Chelsea Shine providing the commentary
  • All of the 2019-20 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on the radio on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game and 20.5 ppg in conference contests. She is currently ranked No. 23 in the nation in scoring
  • Willoughby is four boards shy of moving into the top-10 rebounders in program history. Dawn Staley currently sits at No. 10 with 772 in her career. Willoughby has 768
  • Willoughby, who had her fourth-straight 20-point game at Wake Forest, is averaging 23.0 points per game in that span
  • After leading the Cavaliers to back-to-back ACC wins over Duke and Boston College, Willoughby and freshman guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) were named the ACC Player and Freshman of the Week. It was the first time this season that one school swept both honors
  • Williams was also named the USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman Player of the Week. Williams had nine points and nine steals in the win over the Blue Devils. The nine steals was the most in a single game by an ACC player this season and one shy of tying the program record. She followed that performance by scoring a season-high 17 points at Boston College
  • Williams is averaging 10.8 points per game in conference games this season
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) leads the team in blocked shots (13) and is second in steals (22) and third in rebounding (5.2)
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) has had four-straight double-digit scoring efforts, averaging 12.75 points per game in that span
  • Senior forward Lisa Jablonowski (Ernster, Luxembourg) had a season-high 11 rebounds at Wake Forest
  • Jablonowski has a +2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio in ACC games (11 assists, five turnovers)
  • Virginia had a season-low nine turnovers at Wake Forest. The team only turned the ball over three times in the second half
  • Heading into last Sunday’s game, BC led the ACC in scoring. UVA’s defense held the Eagles to 52 points, 26.5 points below their season scoring average. UNC was leading the ACC in scoring when UVA played them on Jan. 2. In that game, the Cavaliers held the Tar Heels to 14.8 points below their season scoring average heading into the game. Wake Forest is averaging 74.3 points per game. UVA held the Deacs to 12.3 points below their average

 
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH

  • Virginia Tech had a bye on Thursday
  • Last Saturday, the Hokies fell in overtime to Duke, 72-67. Freshman center Elizabeth Kitley scored 21 points with nine rebounds in the game
  • Aisha Sheppard leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per game. She leads the ACC with 3.13 three-pointers per game
  • Taja Cole, a grad transfer from Georgia, leads the conference in assists per game (6.3), which ranks sixth in the country. She is fourth in the ACC with a 1.84 assist-to-turnover ratio
  • Virginia Tech is the top three-point shooting team in the ACC, making 36.6 percent of its long range attempts
  • Virginia leads the all-time series, 50-13, and has won five of the last six meetings

 
COMMONWEALTH CLASH

  • The Virginia-Virginia Tech game is part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529, which is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams of the Cavaliers and Hokies
  • The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line
  • The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy.
  • The UVA-VT game is worth a half point in the Clash and the Cavaliers lead this year’s Clash 4.5-2
  • UVA captured the Clash in 2015, 2016 and 2019, while Virginia Tech has won the Clash in 2017 and 2018.

 
#NGWSD

  • Since 1996, the Virginia Department of Athletics and the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center have collaborated in a celebration of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day, an event that brings national attention to the achievements of female athletes and to issues facing girls and women in sport.
  • The theme of this year’s event is “Breaking Barriers on Any Field.”
  • Virginia women’s lacrosse alumna Jennifer Langton is this year’s honoree
  • Langton serves as Vice President of Health and Safety Initiatives for the National Football League. She manages the NFL’s medical investment portfolio which supports engineering advancements and independent medical research aimed to improve the health and safety of NFL players. Langton previously served as NFL’s Vice President of Business Ventures and Finance where she was responsible for strategic planning and financial management of league business units.  Before joining the NFL, she served as the Chief Financial Officer, North America of Atari. At Virginia, Langton was a four-year member of the women’s lacrosse team (1994-97). In her senior season, she was presented with the Betty and Money Yates Award in recognition of service and dedication to the women’s lacrosse program
  • There will also be a pregame sports festival on the upper concourse of JPJ beginning at 1:30. The festival will include sports stations for youth eighth grade and under to visit. Those completing all of the sports stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. There will also be face painting, balloon artist, pop-a-shot, Plinko and a chance to meet Virginia student-athletes. Doors to the arena open at 1:30, 30 minutes earlier than normal. The sports festival is free with admission to the game

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia plays at No. 5 Louisville on Thursday, January 23 at 8 p.m. on a game that will be televised on the ACC Regional Sports Networks
  • The Cavaliers are back at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday. January 26, hosting Notre Dame (6-12, 1-5 ACC) in a 2 p.m. game
