CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s basketball guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week, based on a vote by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Williams scored a season-high 20 points against No. 5 Louisville, in just 22 minutes on the court. Williams fueled the Cavaliers’ second-half comeback bid, scoring eight points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth, narrowing a one-time 20-point deficit to 10 points.

Against Notre Dame, she helped lead UVA to its largest margin of victory, and its largest point total of the year. In addition to adding 15 points, she assisted on six baskets and grabbed six rebounds.

This is Williams’ second conference ACC Freshman of the Week honor and the third time this season that a Cavalier has earned the accolade. Williams also was the conference Freshman of the Week on Jan. 13 and Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) did so on Nov. 25.

Virginia plays at North Carolina (14-6, 5-4 ACC) on Thursday at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Syracuse (9-10, 3-5 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones arena.
