CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s tennis freshman Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) has been named the UTR ITA Division I Player of the Week it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday (Jan. 28).

She was also named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.

The freshman went undefeated last week in both singles and doubles to help lead the Cavaliers at the ITA Kickoff weekend regional at Kansas. Virginia, the No. 20 team in the nation, defeated both No. 16 California and No. 22 Tennessee to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Subhash defeated No. 45 Julia Rosenqvist of California in the opening match of the weekend to help the Cavaliers clinch the 4-1 victory and won her doubles match with partner Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) to help Virginia lock up the doubles point against the Bears.

In the final against Tennessee, Subhash defeated No. 72 Kaitlin Staines in straight sets to get the Cavaliers on the board as Virginia rallied for the 4-3 victory.

The UTR/ITA National Player of the Month/Week awards program honor male and female individuals from all five divisions (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Junior College) beginning with monthly awards in the fall (September, October, November) and moving to a weekly award during the spring dual-match season.

A player’s current Universal Tennis Rating Powered by Oracle and ITA Ranking, and that of his or her opponents, is part of the criteria used in the selection of the winners.

Virginia returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 30) when the Cavaliers host Richmond in a 3 p.m. match at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
