Virginia Plays at North Carolina on Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (8-12, 3-6 ACC) travels to play at North Carolina (14-6, 5-4 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.4 points per game. She is currently ranked No. 25 in the nation
  • Willoughby is second in the ACC in free throw percentage (88.2 percent), which ranks 13th in the nation
  • With her six rebounds against Virginia Tech, Willoughby moved into the top-10 rebounders in program history. She is one rebound shy of moving into a tie for ninth place with Sarah Imovbioh (2013-15) on the career rebounding list and 13 away from tying Brandi Teamer in eighth place
  • Guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) earned her second ACC Freshman of the Week award on Monday. Williams scored a season-high 20 points at Louisville and then added 15 points with six rebounds and six assists against Notre Dame
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.), making the first start of her career, had her second career double-double against Notre Dame with 11 rebounds and 10 assists. She was the first Cavalier to have a rebounds/assist double-double since Dominique Toussaint against Saint Louis on Nov. 25, 2018
  • Williams and Kornegay-Lucas weren’t the only freshman posting career highs last week. Guard Carole Miller (Alexandria, Va.) led the Cavaliers with 18 points in the win over Notre Dame, topping her previous career high of 10 points. Forward Meg Jefferson (Sydney, Australia) scored a career-best seven points against the Irish
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games
  • The Cavaliers are coming off a 90-60 victory over Notre Dame on Thursday night. The 90 points was the most points scored by the Cavaliers since a 103-59 victory over Central Connecticut on Nov. 12, 2017
  • The 90 points is tied for the most points scored in an ACC contest this year. Two other teams have also hit the 90 point mark this season, Syracuse against Florida State and NC State against Notre Dame
  • The 30-point margin of victory was the Cavaliers’ largest in an ACC game since topping Virginia Tech by 49, 76-27, on Jan. 26, 2017
  • Virginia has a field goal shooting percentage of 42.2 percent in ACC games this season. This is a significant improvement over the 37.5 percent the team shot during non-conference games. The Cavaliers have also raised their points per game to 61.8 from 59.5 and their turnover margin to +1.78 from -2.3
  • Virginia has played the toughest schedule in the nation this season and is No. 35 in the most-recent RPI rankings

 
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA

  • North Carolina is coming off a 76-68 loss at NC State on Sunday after upsetting the Wolfpack, 66-60, earlier in the season
  • Shayla Bennett led the Tar Heels in scoring against NC State on Sunday with 24 points, her third 20-point game in ACC play
  • UNC is averaging 75.2 points per game and has a +14.2 scoring margin
  • Janelle Bailey leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game with all five of the starters averaging in double figures
  • North Carolina leads the all-time series 53-34
  • The Tar Heels have won the last 12 meetings in Chapel Hill. UVA’s last road win over UNC was on Jan. 11, 2001
  • North Carolina won the meeting in Charlottesville earlier this season (Jan. 2) by a score of 65-47
  • Jocelyn Willoughby, Shemera Williams and Lisa Jablonowski each scored 12 points. All five North Carolina starters finished the game in double figures, led by 16 points from senior center Janelle Bailey.
  • North Carolina went on an 18-2 run in the first six minutes of the second quarter to take control of the game Virginia shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58). North Carolina shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61). Virginia held a 40-34 edge in rebounding

ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia returns home to host Syracuse (9-10, 3-5 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. The Syracuse game is the annual Play4Kay game. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to join the team in raising awareness for the fight against women’s cancers
