CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (7-3, 0-1 ACC) returns to action at home this weekend, hosting No. 7 Virginia Tech (8-1, 0-1 ACC) in a 7 p.m. dual on Friday (Jan. 31) at John Paul Jones Arena.
 
Friday’s match is sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. VIRGINIA WRESTLERS IN THE RANKINGS
The Cavaliers have two wrestlers ranked at their weight classes in the latest edition of the InterMat rankings. Senior Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) leads the way as the second-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, while junior Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) is ranked No. 9 at 197 pounds.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOOS
The Cavaliers opened the ACC portion of the dual schedule on the road at No. 5 NC State, falling in that conference opening-dual with the Wolfpack. Mueller started things off for the Cavaliers with a strong performance against Jakob Camacho, while Aiello picked up a bonus-point victory against No. 16 Nick Reenan.

A LOOK AT THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech enters the dual with an overall record of 8-1 and is coming off a 23-10 loss to No. 12 North Carolina at home in last weekend’s ACC opener. The Hokies have wrestled six nationally-ranked opponents this season with wins over five of them. The only common opponent in the dual schedule is Chattanooga, a team that Virginia Tech defeated 29-3 and the Cavaliers defeated 23-9.

Virginia Tech features six wrestlers who are nationally-ranked in their weight class, including fifth-ranked David McFadden at 165 pounds and second-ranked Hunter Bolen at 184 pounds.

SPENCER CONTINUES TO BE A NATIONAL LEADER IN WINS BY FALL
Redshirt sophomore Denton Spencer (Waverly, Ga.) continues to rank among the national leaders in wins by fall with eight falls against qualifying opponents to put him ninth nationally as he has racked up those wins in a combined 12:58 of action. 

CAVALIER TRIO HAS BEEN ON A ROLL
Three members of the squad have been on a roll lately with Aiello, Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) and Mueller all having sustained success. Aiello has won 9-of-10 matches with his lone loss coming at the hands of No. 8 Christian Brunner of Purdue in the finals at the Midlands Championship. He also defeated No. 2 Jacob Warner (Iowa) and No. 10 Ethan Laird (Rider) in that stretch. Miller has also won 9-of-10 heading into this weekend – six of those victories have been by bonus-points with four wins by fall. Mueller is 9-0 on the season with three pins, two major decisions and a technical fall.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PITTSBURGH
The ACC Championships will be hosted by Pittsburgh this season on Sunday, March 8, at the Petersen Events Center. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here. All seating is general admission and a single ticket is $10, while children 18 and under are $5. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $3 each.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAVALIERS
Virginia will go back on the road next weekend to wrestle at No. 10 Pittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 7, in a 7 p.m. dual. It will be the first of back-to-back road duals in conference action for the Cavaliers who will then continue to wrestle on the road at Duke the following weekend.
