Virginia Hosts Duke on Thursday at 6 p.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (5-9, 0-3 ACC) will take on Duke (7-7, 1-2 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 9 at John Paul Jones Arena. The game has an early 6 p.m. tip time.

  • The game will be televised on the ACC Network and will stream online through ACCNX

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) has moved back into the ACC scoring lead, averaging 19.1 points per game, which ranks 28th in the nation. Louisville’s Dana Evans is second at 18.5 points per game. Only one Cavalier, Monica Wright, has ever finished the year as the conference’s leading scorer. She did so in both her junior (2009) and senior (2010) seasons, averaging 20.5 and 23.7 points per game, respectively
  • Willoughby picked up her 750th career rebound against UNC. She is 17 boards shy of moving into the top-10 rebounders in program history. Dawn Staley currently sits at No. 10 with 772 in her career
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 14 points at NC State, her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season
  • Toussaint has had three or more assists in each of the last seven games. She leads the team with 41 assists this year and has 341 in her career. She is 39 assists shy of moving into the top-10 in program history
  • Senior forward Lisa Jablonowski (Ernster, Luxembourg) has scored in double figures in four of her last five games. She scored at least 10 points against UNLV, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina, the first time in her career that she had four-straight double-digit scoring performances
  • Freshman Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) is second on the team in rebounding. The guard has yet to start a game this season, but is averaging 5.8 rebounds per contest
  • The Cavaliers are second in the ACC in free throw shooting, making 73.3 percent of their attempts. Willoughby, who went 10-of-10 from the free throw line at NC State, is second in the ACC with an 89.0 efficiency from the stripe. It was Willoughby’s second time this season making 10 free throws, matching her output in the season-opener against Bucknell
  • Virginia is fourth in the ACC in three-point field goal defense, limiting opponents to 28.0 percent long-range shooting

 
SCOUTING DUKE

  • The Blue Devils are trying to snap a four-game losing streak that includes setbacks against Florida Gulf Coast (78-56) and Wake Forest (60-58)
  • Duke’s conference victory was an 85-73 win against Boston College on Dec. 8
  • Haley Gorecki is fourth in the ACC in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game. Both Gorecki and Miela Goodchild have made 25 three-pointers this season, and both are shooting 32.9 percent from long range
  • Duke leads the ACC with 9.57 steals per game
  • Duke leads the all-time series, 38-33
  • Last season, the Cavaliers snapped a streak of 26-straight losses to the Blue Devils with a 53-47 victory at John Paul Jones Arena. Jocelyn Willoughby scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and Dominique Toussaint scored 14 points, with 10 of those coming in the first half

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia has back-to-back road games, playing at Boston College (8-6, 1-2 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. before playing at Wake Forest (9-5, 2-1 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
  • The Boston College game will be televised on the ACC Network while the Wake Forest game will stream on ACCNX
  • Virginia returns home on Sunday, Jan. 19 to host Virginia Tech in a Commonwealth Clash game at 3 p.m.
  • The January 19th game is also the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. There will be a pregame sports festival on the upper concourse of JPJ beginning at 1:30. The festival will include sports stations for youth eighth grade and under to visit. Those completing all of the sports stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. There will also be face painting, balloon artist, pop-a-shot, Plinko and a chance to meet Virginia student-athletes. Doors to the arena open at 1:30, 30 minutes earlier than normal. The sports festival is free with admission to the game
