Virginia Hosts Syracuse on Sunday in the #Play4Kay Pink Game

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (8-13, 3-7 ACC) hosts Syracuse (10-10, 4-5 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena
 
BROADCAST INFORMATION

  • The game will stream online through ACCNX. ACCNX streams are available through participating TV providers that carry ACCN and can be watched on the ESPN app and through WatchESPN
  • All of the 2019-20 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on the radio on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA

#PLAY4KAY

  • Sunday’s game is the Cavaliers’ #Play4Kay pink game. The game honors former NC State head coach Kay Yow and is designed to raise awareness for the fight against women’s cancers
  • The players will be wearing pink jerseys for the game and encourage fans to wear pink to the game as well
  • Additionally, the Cavaliers will be wearing a special patch on their shooting shirts to honor Syracuse guard Tiana Mangakahia, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer (#Tough4T)
  • Free pink rally towels will be given out to fans at the doors (while supplies last)
  • There will be a special #Play4Kay cancer survivor recognition at halftime

 
NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game. She is currently ranked No. 27th in the nation in scoring. She is 10th in the conference in rebounding, averaging 7.9 per game
  • Willoughby is second in the ACC in free throw percentage (87.6 percent), which ranks 15th in the nation
  • Willoughby had her eighth double-double of the year at North Carolina, with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Her eight double-doubles is the third-highest tally in the conference
  • Willoughby ranks 14th on Virginia’s career points list and ninth on the career rebounding list. She is 18 points shy of tying Brandi Teamer for 13th place on the career points list and one rebound away from Teamer on the career rebounding list. Teamer played for the Cavaliers from 2002-05, earning the National Freshman of the Year accolade from GBallMag.com as well as the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2002 and then going on to pace the Cavaliers in scoring in both her junior and senior seasons
  • Freshman guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.), the reigning ACC Freshman of the Week, scored 14 points against UNC, including having her best night at the stripe of her career, going 8-of-9. In the last three games, Williams is averaging 16.3 points per game and is 16-of-21 from the free throw line (76.1 percent)
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) has scored in double figures in seven of her last eight games, including scoring a team-high 16 points at UNC. She has lifted her season scoring average up to 10.3 points per game
  • Redshirt freshman guard Amandine Toi (Paris, France) scored a season-high 13 points at North Carolina, hitting a season-high four three-pointers. She went 3-of-3 from long range in the fourth quarter
  • Virginia scored 27 fast break points at UNC while the Tar Heels scored 16. Against Notre Dame, UVA had 22 fastbreak points while the Irish had five
  • Virginia went 10-of-14 from the field (71.4 percent) in the fourth quarter at North Carolina. On Sunday against Notre Dame, the Cavaliers were 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the field in the second quarter, giving them back-to-back games of shooting over 70 percent in a period. It wasn’t the team’s best quarter shooting of the year, though. At Boston College, UVA was 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter

 
SCOUTING SYRACUSE

  • Syracuse is coming off a 67-65 win over Virginia Tech on Thursday night, erasing a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to pick up the victory. Syracuse trailed the entire game until the final five seconds when Kiara Lewis gave Syracuse the lead
  • Kiara Lewis is fourth in the ACC in scoring, averaging 17.7 points per game. She is fifth in assists per game (5.2) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.44)
  • Syracuse leads the ACC and is sixth in the nation in blocked shots per game (6.0). Emily Engstler averages 1.85 blocked shots per game while Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi (1.55), Amaya Finklea-Guilty (1.10) and Digna Strautmane (1.0) all average at least one blocked shot per game
  • The Orange lead the conference in three-point field goals attempted, are third in three-pointers made (7.9 per game), but 14th in three-point shooting percentage (28.3 percent)
  • Syracuse leads the all-time series 7-4 and has a 5-1 advantage in ACC games
  • Virginia won the last meeting in Charlottesville, 68-63, on Dec. 31, 2017, but Syracuse has won the last two meetings overall, one last season in New York (72-68) and one last season in the ACC Tournament (67-57)

  • Virginia closes out its current homestand by hosting Clemson on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena
