Virginia Sends Members to Tiger Paw Invite, David Hemery Valentine Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will close the indoor regular season this weekend as the Cavaliers send members of the team to the Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson, S.C., and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. Both competitions will run from Friday (Feb. 14) to Saturday (Feb. 15).

The Weekend Competitions
• The Cavaliers will head to the Tiger Paw Invite and the David Hemery Valentine Invite for the third consecutive year.
• Virginia will compete against eight ranked men’s teams and nine ranked women’s teams at the Tiger Paw Invite, including the top ranked men’s and women’s program in Florida State and Southern California, respectively.
• The Cavaliers will face members from four ranked programs at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, competing alongside Florida State, LSU, Indiana and Colorado.
Records Continue to Fall
• Redshirt senior Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) is the latest Cavalier to top a UVA record.
• Young jumped 5.32m (17’5.5″) in the pole vault at the Doc Hale Elite Meet to top a 15-year-old UVA record in the event set by David Sullivan in 2005.
• Young is one of four UVA athletes to set a school record this season.
• Junior Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.) ran a time of 21.42 in the 200m dash at the Navy Invitational II to top Gerald Howard’s record in the event from 1995.
• Senior Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) surpassed their own UVA record in an event. Woodley ran a time of 8.31 in the 60m hurdles at the Hokie Invitational, while Hazzard captured a time of 7.31 in the 60m dash at the Doc Hale Elite Meet.
• Senior high jumper Brenton Foster (Townsville, Australia) tied the school record he shares with Herman Moore at the Navy Invitational II, clearing 2.21m (7’3″).
Leaping to the Top
• Senior Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) captured the top triple jump mark in the country in his indoor debut at the Doc Hale Elite Meet.
• Scott recorded four of the NCAA’s top-six marks in the event during the series as he jumped beyond 54 feet on three attempts and 53 feet on a fourth jump.
• Scott’s jump is also the 12th best by an athlete in the world and ranks 15th for all jumps internationally this season.
• In addition to Scott, Foster ranks 14th in the NCAA for his high jump performance at the Navy Invitational.
• Hazzard holds the 18th-fastest 60m dash time in the NCAA with her record-setting run from the Doc Hale Elite Meet.
• The men’s DMR team of redshirt senior Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.), Willis, senior AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) and redshirt senior Ari Klau (West Hartford, Conn.) hold in the top 15 after opening the season with a time of 9:47.33 in the event. The team ranks 13th nationally.
Pacing the ACC
• The Cavaliers will close the regular season this weekend as the team continues to build for the ACC Championships in Notre Dame, Ind., Feb. 27-29.
• Virginia leads the league in four events as Young holds the top ACC pole vault mark and Scott holds the top triple jump mark.
• Junior Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) leads the conference in the shot put with a career-best 16.27m (53’4.5″) mark from the Navy Invitational II.
• Freshman Derek Pekar (Ventura, Calif.) scored 5,354 points in the heptathlon at the Hokie Invitational to lead the ACC in the event.
