No. 9 Virginia Takes 6-1 Win Over Clemson Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s tennis team (8-3, 2-1 ACC) claimed the doubles point and five singles matches on the way to a 6-1 victory over No. 37 Clemson (9-4, 1-2 ACC) on Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. 

Virginia won the doubles point with a pair of victories on courts two and three. The tandem of Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) and Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, British Columbia) turned in a 6-2 win on court three before the duo of Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) and Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) would lock up the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court two.

The Cavaliers then clinched the match with three consecutive singles wins on courts one, four and two, respectively. Fifteenth-ranked Subhash turned in the quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup before Glozman won her match 6-3, 6-2. Johanson, who is ranked No. 35 in singles, battled through a first-set tiebreak before clinching her match and the dual at two singles by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-3.

The remaining three matches all went to a third set with Clemson getting on the board with a win at six singles. Virginia then closed things out with No. 89 Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.) winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 at three singles before No. 95 Munera would win her match 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (0) at five singles.

“I’m really proud of the way we played today on the quick turnaround after a tough match in Atlanta on Friday. The ladies were composed today and handled our first match outdoors with a high degree of professionalism and were able to get off to a good start against a tough Clemson team. It’s a great performance to build off of as we continue on the rest of our ACC schedule. I feel we got better as a team today and look forward to getting back in action next weekend.”

MATCH NOTES

• Virginia won the doubles point for the 10th time in 11 matches this season.
• The doubles tandem of Munera and Subhash improved to 11-2 this season and 9-2 in dual play.
• With the win, the Cavaliers move to 12-37 all-time against Clemson and have won back-to-back matches.

UP NEXT FOR VIRGINIA
The Cavaliers go back out on the road next weekend for a pair of ACC contests against top-5 opponents. Virginia takes on No. 1 North Carolina at 3 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 28) before facing No. 4 NC State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (March 1).
