Virginia Plays a Home Doubleheader on Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s tennis team (5-4) will play a pair of matches on Thursday, February 27, taking on George Mason (2-3) at 11 a.m. and Norfolk State (0-1) at 4:30 p.m.
 
MATCH DETAILS

  • Live streaming video and live scoring will be available through links on VirginiaSports.com
  • Both matches will be played indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club

 
NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The Cavaliers are coming off a 17-day break. These are their first matches since February 9
  • Virginia remains in the top-25 of the Tennis Channel/ USTA College Tennis rankings, coming in at No. 25. The squad is No. 37 in this week’s ITA rankings
  • Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) leads the squad with a 16-7 singles record. Sophomore William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) has the top dual record with a 6-1 mark
  • Senior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) are 4-1 this spring in doubles, including a 3-1 record on Court One

 
NOTING THE OPPONENTS

  • George Mason senior Edward Ayers is the first player in program history to compete at the ITA All-American championships, which he did in October. a 2019 All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection, posted an impressive 10-6 dual record while leading Mason at the No. 1 singles position last season
  • Former Cavalier All-American Mitchell Frank is a volunteer assistant coach for the Patriots
  • Norfolk State was selected second in the preseason MEAC poll
  • The Spartans finished last season 5-9, and 2-1 in MEAC play to finish second in the Northern Division. The Spartans have four players returning from last year’s team, all entering their senior season. Andres Alcaraz and Agustin Carrizo both won seven matches last year, while Vini Da Silva and Ignacio Guevel finished last season with winning records

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers will close out the weekend by hosting Notre Dame on Sunday, March 1 at 12 noon at the Snyder Tennis Center
  • Please note the 12:00 start time to this match. The match was originally slated for a later time when the schedule was announced, but has been moved up to a noon start
  • Sunday’s match is scheduled to be played outdoors at Snyder, but could be moved indoors depending on the temperature. You can keep up to date with venue changes on the Cavaliers’ social media outlets
