Virginia Hosts Pitt on Thursday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (12-15, 7-9 ACC) plays Pittsburgh (4-23, 1-15 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia is looking for its fifth-straight win on the home court when it hosts Pitt on Thursday night. Overall, Virginia has won four of its last six games
  • Virginia is coming off an 86-76 victory at Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Cavaliers shot over 70 percent from the field in both the first and fourth quarters, going 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) in the first and 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) in the fourth. The team shot 57.4 percent overall, its best shooting game of the year and the fourth time this year shooting over 50 percent in a game
  • Virginia is shooting 41.6 percent from the field in ACC contests, ranking fifth, and is +1.69 in turnover margin, which also ranks fifth
  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game (a league-best 20.1 points per game in ACC contests). She is currently ranked No. 15 in the nation in scoring. Only one Cavalier, Monica Wright, has ever finished the year as the conference’s leading scorer. She did so in both her junior (2009) and senior (2010) seasons, averaging 20.5 and 23.7 points per game, respectively
  • With her 29-point performance at Virginia Tech, Willoughby moved into the top-10 in program history for career points and currently ranks ninth and is seventh on the career rebounding list. She is one of just five players to currently rank in the top-10 for both statistics (Heather Burge, Wendy Palmer, Lyndra Littles, Cathy Grimes). Dawn Staley also was in the top-10 for both statistics until Willoughby passed her and relegated her to 11th on the career rebounding list
  • Willoughby is second in the ACC in free throw percentage (88.2 percent), ranking 12th in the nation. She was 12-of-14 from the stripe against Virginia Tech
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a career-high 29 points in the victory at Virginia Tech, including 17 points in the first half, which alone eclipsed her previous season high. It was the first 20-point game of her career
  • Toussaint has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games. After averaging 8.8 points per game through the first 13 games of the season, she has raised her average to 11.3 points per game. She is averaging 12.6 points per game in conference contests
  • With her seven assists in the game at Virginia Tech, Toussaint moved into the career top-10 for that stat, ranking 10th with 383. With 129 made-threes, she is two shy of moving into the top-10 in that statistical category
  • Last Thursday at Duke, the Cavaliers’ trio of seniors all finished with double-digit points, supplying 37 of Virginia’s 47 points: Jocelyn Willoughby (15), Lisa Jablonowski (12), Dominique Toussaint (10)
  • On Sunday at Virginia Tech, Jablonowski scored nine points in addition to the 29-point games had by Willoughby and Toussaint, with the seniors accounting for 67 of Virginia’s 86 points
  • All three, as well as Felicia Aiyeotan (Lagos, Nigeria), will be honored at Sunday’s game as part of the annual Senior Day ceremony

 
SCOUTING PITT

  • Pitt is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. It’s last win was a 53-48 home victory over Wake Forest on Jan. 30
  • The Panthers are last in the ACC in scoring, averaging 57.3 points per game, and are also at the bottom in points allowed at 70.8 per game. In conference games, they have a -18.1 scoring margin
  • Aysia Bugg leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.1 points per game
  • Rita Igbokwe is third in the ACC with 1.78 blocked shots per game
  • The Panthers are also led by a pair of freshman standouts, Amber Brown who is eighth in rebounding at 8.0 per game and has twice been named the ACC Freshman of the Week, and Dayshanette Harris, who is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game
  • Pitt leads the all-time series, 5-4, with Virginia winning the last two meetings

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia will close out the regular season by hosting No. 8 NC State on Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
