Schubert Wins 200 IM to Lead Virginia at ACC Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) captured an ACC title in the 200-yard individual medley to lead the Virginia men’s swimming team on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Cavaliers moved into second place with 438 points. NC State leads the meet with 488 points while Florida State is in third place with 420.5 points.
Schubert turned in a 50-yard freestyle time of 24.80 to out-touch the competition and win the ACC title in the 200-yard individual medley by four-hundredths of a second. He finished with a time of 1:43.09, topping his UVA record in the event and capturing the seventh-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Schubert won Virginia’s first title in the event since David Karasek captured the conference win in 2012.
Freshman Jack Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) earned his first podium finish, capturing a time of 4:11.93 in the 500-yard freestyle to finish second in the event. His time ranks second in UVA history and seventh in the NCAA this season. Walker earned All-ACC honors with his finish.
Senior Ryan Baker (Arlington, Va.) set a UVA record in the 50-yard freestyle. Baker recorded a time of 19.42 to drop 11- hundredths of a second off his career-best time in the event and surpass Scot Robison’s mark of 19.47. Baker finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle after entering the finals as the eighth seed.
Virginia will be back in action on Friday for day three of the ACC Championships. Prelims will start at 10 a.m. Finals will start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ACCNX.
