Virginia Hosts Clemson on Thursday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (9-13, 4-7 ACC) hosts Clemson (7-15, 3-8 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (east Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game. She is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation in scoring. She is 10th in the conference in rebounding, averaging 7.9 per game
  • Willoughby is second in the ACC in free throw percentage (87.2 percent), which ranks 17th in the nation
  • Willoughby is coming off her 10th 20-point game of the season against Syracuse. She scored 24 points in a season-low 27 minutes on the court.
  • Willoughby has moved up to 13 on the UVA career scoring list. She also moved up one spot on the career rebounding list, ranking 8th. She needs 96 points to move into the top-10 in program history and 70 rebounds to make the top-five in that category
  • Virginia’s defense was dominant in Sunday’s victory over Syracuse. Syracuse was held to 41 points, the fewest points allowed by UVA this season. It was also the fewest points scored by the Orange since falling to Rutgers, 68-40 on Feb. 14, 2007
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (Camden, Del.) matched her career high in rebounds against Syracuse, grabbing 12. Kornegay-Lucas is averaging 11.5 rebounds per game in her two starts this season
  • Junior forward Tihana Stojsavljevic (Zagreb, Croatia) grabbed a career-high eight rebounds against Syracuse, doing so in 14 minutes on the court. Stojsavljevic came into the game with eight total rebounds in her first seven games this season. She has 16 rebounds this season in eight games. In 23 games across two seasons with Maine and Texas Tech, she had a total of 18 rebounds
  • Freshman guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) has scored in double figures in each of the last four games, averaging 15.0 points per game in that span. Williams has scored in double figures in 10 of her 14 games this season
  • A different Cavalier has led the team in scoring in each of the last four games (Williams 20 points at Louisville; Carole Miller 18 vs Notre Dame; Dominique Toussaint 16 at UNC; Jocelyn WIlloughby 24 vs Syracuse)
  • The Virginia men’s basketball team is hosting Clemson on Wednesday night at JPJ
  • In the last three games, Virginia is +9.0 in rebounding. UVA outrebounded both Notre Dame (+12) and Syracuse (+15) by double digits and were even in rebounding against North Carolina
  • Virginia is averaging 36.0 points in the paint in the last three games, including scoring 50 points in the paint against Notre Dame

 
SCOUTING CLEMSON

  • Clemson has a 3-8 record in conference play and comes into Thursday’s game after dropping its last four contests
  • Clemson leads the ACC in offensive rebounds per game (15.3) and is seventh in overall rebounding (41.0 per game)
  • Kobi Thorton, who scored 22 points in Sunday’s loss to North Carolina, leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game. Amari Robinson leads the defensive efforts with 6.5 rebounds per game while also scoring 10.9 points per game
  • Kendall Spray is averaging 2.64 made-threes per game
  • The Tigers are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018-19, its first since 2002. Head Coach Amanda Butler was named the ACC Coach of the Year following her first season at the helm, after guiding the Tigers to a seventh-place finish
  • Virginia leads the all-time series, 44-31, and has won five of the last six meetings. The Tigers won last year’s match-up 71-65 at Clemson

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers travel to take on No. 17 Florida State on Sunday, February 9 with an early noon tip time. The game will be televised on the ACC Network
  • Virginia returns home to host Miami on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
