WASHINGTON –  The No. 8 Virginia men’s squash team (16-4) defeated No. 12 George Washington (9-9), 8-1, at Squash on Fire on Saturday (Feb. 8) to earn a spot in Sunday’s finals for Mid-Atlantic Squash Championship.
 
The Cavaliers had three freshmen capture perfect 3-0 wins during the match. Freshmen Omar El Torkey (New Cairo, Egypt) and Aly Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) swept their matches 3-0 at the top of the ladder. El Torkey defeated Moustafa Montaser 11-2, 11-9, 11-8 in position one while Hussein went 11-4, 11-1, 11-3 against Salim Khan in position two. Teddy Durfee (Bedford, N.Y.) captured a 3-0 win against Lucas Stauffer in position seven with a score of 11-9, 11-8, 11-5.
 
In position five, redshirt freshman Peter Miller (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) defeated Karim Thabet 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4, while senior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) went 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-3 against David Varela in position six. Junior Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) captured a 3-1 win against Abbas Saeed, going 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 in position nine.
 
After dropping the first two games, sophomore Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.) battled for a 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 win in position three against Jamie Oakley. Junior William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) topped position eight against Juan Laguna 13-15, 11-8, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8.
 
Virginia will face No. 14 Franklin & Marshall (16-4) in the championship match tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Squash on Fire.

Match Notes:
• Virginia is 4-1 against George Washington since becoming a varsity program.
• The Cavaliers defeated the Colonials 7-2 during the regular season.
• It’s the second tournament meeting for the two programs as Virginia defeated George Washington 5-4 during last year’s Mid-Atlantic Tournament matchup.
• Virginia had three Cavaliers record a 3-0 match win.
• The Cavaliers will face Franklin & Marshall for the second time this year after opening the 2020 season against the Diplomats. Virginia won that meeting 6-3.
 • Virginia is 5-0 against the Diplomats.
• Franklin & Marshall defeated the nation’s sixth-ranked and top-seeded team of the tournament Drexel to earn a spot in tomorrow’s championship.
