No. 10 Virginia Defeats No. 14 George Washington, No. 23 Dickinson in MASC Championships

WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (14-5) captured a pair of wins in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships on Saturday (Feb. 8), defeating No. 14 George Washington (5-14) 7-2 and No. 23 Dickinson (4-11) 9-0 in the conference championships.
 
Against George Washington
The Cavaliers opened the day with a 7-2 win against the No. 14 Colonials at Squash on Fire. Freshman Julia Curran (Bronxville, N.Y.) recorded the first point of the match, going 11-1, 11-2, 11-6 against Anna Moscovici. Junior Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) followed with a 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-0 win in position five against Zuha Nazir, while freshman Grace Seymour (Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.) defeated Claire Foley 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 in position eight and senior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) defeated Grace Stevenson 11-2, 11-1, 11-1 in position nine to give Virginia a 4-1 lead.
 
Senior Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) clinched the match point with a 9-11, 10-12, 13-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory against Vedika Arunachalam in position six. Freshman Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) closed the match with wins in positions four and three, respectively. Maxwell defeated Nikki Pang 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 as Haywood went 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 against Emma Tryon.
 
Against Dickinson
The Cavaliers swept No. 23 Dickinson at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts to record a 9-0 win against the Red Devils. Sophomore Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) went 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 against Eloise Nimoityn at the top of the ladder. Maxwell captured an 11-1, 11-4, 11-4 win against Aya Sobhy in position two as Woodworth recorded an 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 win against Doxey Loupassi in position three and Curran recorded an 11-2, 11-5, 11-7 win against Jaime-Leigh Edghill in position four.
 
In position five, Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) defeated Rachel O’Brien 11-2, 11-3, 11-6. Sophomore Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) won 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 in position six, as Arya went 11-2, 11-1, 11-3 in position seven. Junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) rounded out the match with an 11-4, 11-1, 11-0 win in position eight against Katelynn Young.
 
Up Next
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday to take on No. 8 Drexel (10-6) in the final match of the round robin tournament. The two teams will play at 10 a.m. at Squash on Fire.

• Virginia moves to 5-1 in the series against George Washington.
• It is the program’s second win this season against the Colonials after defeating the team 8-1 during the regular season.
