WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Virginia women’s squash team (14-6) suffered a 7-2 loss to No. 8 Drexel (11-6) at Squash on Fire on Sunday (Feb. 9) to finish as the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference runner-up.

The Cavaliers finished the round robin tournament with a 3-1 record, capturing wins against George Washington, Franklin and Marshall and Dickinson over the three-day event. Drexel won the championship and the Gaynor Cup with the win over the Cavaliers.

Two Cavaliers recorded a win against the Dragons. Senior Julia Thompson (Newtown, Square, Pa.) captured a 3-1 win against Ona Prokes for Virginia’s first point of the match. Thompson went 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 13-11 for the position six win. Senior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) closed the competition with an 11-3, 11-6, 11-1 victory over Hatti Specter in position nine.

“Our women’s team worked extremely hard to put themselves in a position to play for their second MASC championship today–not to mention a spot in the top eight,” head coach Mark Allen said. “Unfortunately, we came up just a few matches short against a very talented Drexel squad. I’m proud of the effort and execution our team put in to get to this point. We will use the next two weeks of practice to prepare to play our best at team nationals in New Haven. We expect to be in the B Division, where we will have an excellent chance to bring home that championship trophy.”

Virginia will await seeding for the College Squash Association Team National Championships in New Haven, Conn. The tournament will run Feb. 21-23.

Match Notes:
• Virginia’s loss snaps a six-match winning streak.
• Virginia is 0-3 against Drexel since becoming a varsity program.
• Doss and Thompson record their third win of the tournament during the match against the Dragons.
• The Cavaliers and Dragons are the only two teams to finish the round robin tournament with a winning record.
