Virginia Opens ACC Play at Home Against No. 7 NC State

HARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Atlantic Coast Conference play commences this weekend at Disharoon Park when Virginia (12-3) hosts No. 7 NC State (12-0) on Friday, March 6 at 4 p.m. The three-game series continues on Saturday (March 7) with a 1 p.m. showdown before concluding on Sunday (March 8) at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday’s games will air on ACCNX and the Cavaliers will make its ACC Network debut on Sunday.

FRIDAY: Eight (8) bays in JPJ South lot (formerly U-Hall lot) will be held for first-come, first-served baseball/softball patrons. Overflow parking is also available first-come, first-served in JPJ West/Garage/East Lots.

SATURDAY: Due to the 4 p.m. men’s basketball game, parking for baseball/softball patrons will be at Emmet/Ivy Garage only. A fan shuttle will begin running at noon with two pick up/drop off points – one at the bus stop outside Emmett/Ivy Garage and one at the bus stop on Copeley Road across from the Disharoon Park/Palmer Park ticket booth. The shuttle will run until both the baseball and softball games conclude and both venues are empty of spectators.

SUNDAY: Parking for baseball/softball patrons will be available in JPJ South Lot (formerly U-Hall Lot) with no vacate time. Due to the 6pm Roadshow event at JPJ Arena, JPJ West/Garage/East will have a 3pm vacate time. Emmett/Ivy Garage is also available with no vacate time.

LEADING OFF
• Virginia comes into the weekend winners of six-consecutive games, one win shy matching last season’s longest win streak.
• With a 10-3 record, Virginia has posted double-digit wins through its first 13 games 11 times in 17 seasons under head coach Brian O’Connor including 13-0 starts in 2013, 2009 & 2007.
• Virginia and NC State are two of the 29 teams in Division I College Baseball with a double-digit win total entering the fourth weekend of the season.
• Under head Coach Brian O’Connor, the Cavaliers are 288-179-1 in ACC play. His 288 wins are the 8th most in league history and fourth most among active ACC coaches. His winning percentage (.616) in ACC play is the sixth-highest in league history and second highest among active ACC coaches.
• NC State is the first team on Virginia’s schedule ranked in the USA Today Coaches poll. Last season the Cavaliers were 4-12 against ranked foes.
• Virginia has scored 115 runs this season, the most in the ACC and the ninth most in the country.
• Virginia is 9-1 on its current 15-game home stand, the longest home stint in the Brian O’Connor era (2004-present)
AGAINST NC STATE
• Coming into the series last year, NC State owned a 25-1 record and the Cavaliers handed the Wolfpack a 4-3 loss in the weekend opener. Previously NC State had been unbeaten in all 10 of its one-run games.
• Friday night starter Griff McGarry struck out five of the first six batters he faced and totaled eight in 4.2 innings pitched.
• NC State visits Charlottesville for the first time since 2016, a 2-1 series victory for the Wolfpack.
• Virginia is seeking its first series win over NC State since the 2013 season.
• 12 of the last 15 games between the two schools have been decided by three or less runs, including six by one run.
OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
• The Cavalier offense has totaled 10 or more runs in six of the last eight games, including a 20-run outburst against Dartmouth on Feb. 28.
• The 20-run effort was the first since a 20-7 win over Wagner on March 9, 2016. It marked the 10th time Virginia has scored 20 or more runs under O’Connor. The 22-hit performance in the contest was the most since March 25, 2017 when the Cavaliers racked up 20 in a 13-7 win over Duke. The 22 hits are tied for the eighth most in single game under head Coach Brian O’Connor (since 2004).
• Virginia has racked up 10 or more hits in four of the last five games.
• The only loss on the Cavalier home stand came in a 14-10 decision against Bucknell in which the tying run came to the plate in the ninth. The loss when scoring 10 runs was on the second since the 2015 season.
• Virginia has scored in bunches with five innings of five or more runs in the last four games.
• After not leaving the yard in the first four games of the year, Virginia has hit home runs in eight of the last nine games, including six-straight.
• The Cavaliers have hit 15 home runs through the first 13 games, the second most in O’Connor’s tenure (2017 – 16 HRs). The 15 home runs are third most in the ACC and 16th most in the nation.
ON THE HILL
• The Virginia pitching staff has struck out 152 batters this season, the sixth-most in the country.
• Right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry will be Virginia’s Friday night starter for the fourth-straight week. Opponents are batting .097 off him, the second-lowest in the league.
• Both McGarry and Saturday starter Mike Vasil have set single-game strikeout highs this season – McGarry, 12 strikeouts vs. Dartmouth and Vasil 10 strikeouts vs. Bucknell. The duo is responsible for all three of the staff’s quality starts this season.
• Out of the bullpen, graduate transfer Stephen Schoch is tied for second in the ACC and eighth in the country with four saves. He has appeared in eight games this season and struck out 20 batters in 10.2 innings pitched.
• With a combined 12 appearances, Andrew Abbott and Kyle Whitten have yet to surrender an earned run. Abbott is tied for the team lead with three wins and Whitten has a team-best three bullpen holds to his credit.
PLAYER NOTES
• Logan Michaels and Marc Lebruex have hit safely in a team-high six-straight games. Michaels set new single-game career bests in hits (4), doubles (2) and RBI (4) against Richmond on Tuesday night.
• Freshman Max Cotier tripled for the third time this season in Tuesday’s win over Richmond. The three triples are the most in the ACC and tied for the second most in the country. Two of the three came against Dartmouth last Saturday becoming the first Cavalier since Adam Haseley in 2016 to triple twice in a game.
