No. 12 Virginia Falls 16-10 at No. 23 Duke
DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (5-3, 0-2 ACC) fell 16-10 at No. 23 Duke on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) and Taylor Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.) each scored three goals to lead the Cavaliers. Katie Cronin led Duke with five goals. Mueller also had an assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ashley Stilo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had three caused turnovers.
UVA edged Duke in shots, 32-30, and led 18-9 in ground balls. Duke had the edge in draw controls (22-6) and saves (13-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duke scored first, but Virginia responded with a 3-0 run on goals by Lillie Kloak (Ridgewood, N.J.), Mueller and Regan. Duke scored back-to-back goals to tie it 3-3 with 17:03 to play in the first half. Olivia Schildmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) scored to put UVA back in front. Duke the scored twice before Regan notched her second of the day to tie it 5-5 at the 8:02 mark. The Blue Devils took a 6-5 lead into the half.
Duke scored first out of the break. Regan completed her hat trick with a goal at 24:52. Duke scored again but Mueller cut the lead back to one, 8-7, on a free position goal. The Blue Devils went on a 4-0 run to lead 12-7 with 16:06 to play. UVA scored back-to-back goals from Mueller and Courtlynne Caskin (Potomac, Md.) in 25 seconds to make it 12-8 with 13:36 remaining. The Blue Devils took a 13-9 lead. Kloak recorded her second goal of the afternoon to make it 13-10 with 5:47 to play. Duke scored the final three goals of the contest.

“Duke came out to play and to win today and they competed better than we did from the opening draw. The draw was clearly a category that made a huge impact on the game. We have some things to fix and we have to get a whole lot tougher to be ready to compete no matter who we are playing. We knew Duke was going to be good and they played a great game.”
