CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (1-6) hosts William & Mary (4-2) on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

  • In accordance with UVA Policy, all attendees 12 years of age and older are required to provide proof of vaccination or of a negative COVID-19 test result for entry into John Paul Jones Arena on event days. NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • This is the second straight game for the Cavaliers against a Commonwealth opponent after playing Richmond on Sunday
  • This will be UVA’s second game this season against a CAA opponent after opening the season at James Madison
  • Virginia is coming off a pair of losses in the Cavalier Classic tournament over Thanksgiving weekend
  • There were eight lead changes and five ties in the Rhode Island game and three lead changes and five ties in the Richmond game
  • In the Rhode Island game, the Rams built up an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter (at the 5:20 mark) that UVA got back down to seven points in the final minute (first at 54 seconds and again at 31 seconds) but could not finish off the comeback
  • In the Richmond game, the Spiders built up a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter (8:05 mark) that UVA got down to two (4:23) and trailed by just five in the final minute, but once again could not finish off the comeback
  • Virginia holds an 80-67 edge in offensive rebounds this season. Against Richmond, UVA grabbed a season-high 19 O-boards while the Spiders only had five. Richmond scored zero second-chance points against the Cavaliers
  • The Spiders came into the Cav Classic tournament leading the nation in blocked shots at 10.2 per game, but only logged three blocks against the Cavaliers
  • Grad student guard Amandine Toi had two 20-point games last week averaging 19.5 points per game in UVA’s three contests. In the first two games, Toi went a combined 6-of-12 from three-point range. In Sunday’s game against Richmond, Toi scored her 20 points without making a three-point shot, going 9-of-10 from inside the arc with two free throws
  • Junior forward Camryn Taylor has scored in double figures in six of Virginia’s seven games. She comes into the week ranked sixth in the ACC in points per game (15.4)
  • Taylor is among the conference leaders in field goal attempts (93), made field goals (42), free throw attempts (32) and made free throws (24). She is shooting a team-leading 45.2 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the stripe

NOTING WILLIAM & MARY

  • William & Mary brings a three-game win streak into the game, including a 58-41 win against Hampton on Monday
  • The Tribe has been picked to finish eighth in the preseason Colonial Athletic Association poll out of 10 teams
  • The Tribe has three players averaging in double figures, led by Riley Casey at 14.0 points per game. Sydney Wagner is averaging 11.7 while Bre Ballamy averages 11.2
  • The Tribe are averaging 63.5 points per game but limiting opponents to 53.8 per contest
  • William & Mary opted out due to COVID for the remainder of the 2020-21 season on Feb. 12 after completing 13 games (6-7, 3-5 CAA)
  • William & Mary head coach Ed Swanson was the 2019-20 CAA Co-Coach of the Year
  • Virginia is 10-0 all-time against William & Mary. This is the first meeting between the two since 1999

ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia heads to Washington, D.C. to take on George Washington on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. before returning home to host another school from the District, American, on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
  • The Cavaliers will take an 11-day break for final exams after the American game, returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 19 with their ACC opener at NC State
