CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to compete in three different meets over the weekend. The Cavaliers will compete in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5) while small portions of the team will travel to the Columbia Challenge, and Camel City Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 5).

Eleven schools will compete in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet including Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Tennessee, Charlotte, East Carolina, Kentucky, and VCU.

Both the men’s and women’s teams fell outside the top-25 in the second release of the USTFCCCA rankings this week. The women rank ninth in southeast region while the men rank 12th in the Southeast.

HOO TO WATCH:

Reigning ACC Champion and All-American, Owayne Owens, ranks fifth in the nation in the triple jump after a mark set in his first competition of the season (16.23m / 53’3”). Owens earned ACC Field Athlete of the Week for his performance on Tuesday, January 18. Owens ranks third on Virginia’s all-time performance list in the event.

Virginia’s DMR teams rank amongst the best in the nation this season. The Virginia women rank seventh in the nation and second in the ACC with a time of 11:13.70.  On the men’s side the Cavaliers’ best time ranks 12th in the nation and first in the ACC.

Last time out Maria Deaviz set a personal best and climbed into third on the UVA all-time indoor performance list in the shot put. Her heave reached 16.62m (53’10.05”), a mark that ranks 23rd nationally.

ON THE HORIZON: 

  • Virginia will travel to Clemson, S.C. and Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Bob Pollock Invitational and the Darius Dixon Invitational both beginning on Friday, Feb. 11
