ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s golf team posted one of the best rounds in program history to move into third place after the second day of play at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Cavaliers shot 11-under 277 on Monday and stood in third place in the 18-team field when play was suspended due to darkness. Tournament officials extended play Monday to begin the third round since inclement weather is expected in the area on Tuesday.

When play stopped, UVA stood at 24-under par, trailing only Wake Forest (-39) and Kentucky (-29) on the leaderboard.

UVA’s top two performers contributing to team scoring were sophomore Jennifer Cleary and junior Celeste Valinho. Cleary shot 68 during the second round and stood at 1-under through 13 holes in the third round for a total of 6-under par. Valinho shot 70 during the second round and was 4-under through 14 holes in the third round to also finish play at 6-under park.

Freshman Amanda Sambach was in 18th place at 5-under while senior Riley Smyth was 31st at 2-under par. Sambach shot 69 during the second round while Smyth posted a score of 75. Graduate student Beth Lillie was in 57th place at 3-over par. She shot 70 during the second round.

UVA’s second-round score of 11-under 277 tied as the second best 18-hole total in program history.

Virginia’s Rebecca Skoler, competing as an individual, was tied for sixth place at 8-under when play was suspended. She shot 70 during the second round and was 3-under through 13 holes during her third round.

Play will resume at 8:45 a.m. ET Tuesday.
