CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Six members of the Virginia women’s tennis team will be competing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s first national tournament of the year, the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, being held Oct. 1-9 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.

In singles, freshman Annabelle Xu, sophomore Melodie Collard and junior Sara Ziodato began play on October 1 in the prequalifying tournament. Grad student Julia Adams and sophomore Elaine Chervinsky opened play in the qualifying tournament. Senior Natasha Subhash was in the main draw of both the singles and doubles draws.

In doubles, Adams and Xu will compete in qualifying on Monday. Subhash and Chervinsky are in the main draw.

Since 1983, the ITA Women’s All-American Championships have featured the nation’s top NCAA Division I players and have been a pioneer in women’s college tennis. The event has created milestones that over the years have directly influenced the popularity of women’s collegiate tennis.

MAIN DRAW

Subhash opened main draw play by taking down one of the tournament’s seeded players. Subhash took the court on Wednesday morning and delivered a 6-4, 6-4 victory against 8-seed Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina. Subhash fell 6-1, 6-1 to Kylie Collins of LSU on Thursday in the Round of 16.

Subhash and Chervinsky opened doubles play with a 3-6, 6-4 [13-11] win against Carolyn Ansari and Ariana Arseneault of Auburn. They downed 3-seed Anna Ross and Holly Staff of Vanderbilt  7-6 (2), 5-7, 10-7 Round of 16 on Thursday afternoon. They won 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 against Nikita Vishwase and Anastasiya Komar of  LSU on Friday to advance to the semifinals. Subhash and Chervinsky withdrew from the tournament after the victory, putting an end to their run in the championship.

Adams and Xu, who advanced through qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw, were edged in a tight opener, 5-7, 7-6 (4), [10-7] against Nell Miller and Amelai Rajecki of NC State to drop down into the consolation doubles bracket where they won one match before being eliminated.

PREQUALIFYING AND QUALIFYING RECAP

On Saturday, Collard, Xu and Ziodato all won their opening matches to advance to the second round of prequalifying.

Collard won two matches on Sunday to advance from prequalifying into the qualifying tournament. She was one of  12 players out of the initial pool of 96 advancing into the qualifying tournament.

Xu lost her second-round match in prequalifying while Ziodato advanced to the prequalifying final before being edged 7-5, 6-4.

Ziodato and Collard are also partnered in the prequalifying doubles tournament. They won their opener to advance to the PQ final and then won 8-2 against a tandem from Xavier to earn a spot in the qualifying draw.

Monday brought the start of the two-day qualifying tournament. Collard and Adams both lost their opening matches to drop into the consolation bracket on Tuesday. Elaine Chervinsky moved on to the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Katherine Duong of Illinois.

Xu and Adams picked up two wins in doubles on Monday to advance to Tuesday’s qualifying final. Ziodato and Collard were edged 8-6 by a pair from UCLA to have their doubles run come to a close.

On Tuesday, Chervinsky opened the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Taylor Cataldi of Wisconsin to advance to the qualifying final where she fell 6-2, 6-1 against Ayana Akli of South Carolina.

In doubles, Xu and Adams earned a spot in the main draw with an 8-7 (3) win in the qualifying final against a tandem from Iowa State.
