No. 1 Virginia Hosts No. 5 South Carolina on Sunday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team (3-0) hosts No. 5 South Carolina (0-0) on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS
- The 2022 and 2023 NCAA Champions open the spring season ranked No. 1 in the ITA team rankings. UVA has been ranked No. 1 since the end of the 2023 season
- The Cavaliers bring a 25-match win streak into the contest
- This is Virginia’s second top-five match-up of the week after logging a 4-3 victory at No. 3 Texas on Thursday (Jan. 18) in Austin
- The Cavaliers won the doubles point and picked up wins at 1, 5 and 6
- Senior Alexander Kiefer won the clincher on court five
- Senior Chris Rodesch defeated No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri in straight sets in the highest-ranked win of his career
- Virginia will have one more top-five match before ITA Indoors, playing at No. 2 Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 2
ABOUT THE MATCH-UP
- This is the first dual match of the year for the Gamecocks. They hosted a home tournament Jan. 5-7 but there were no team scores in the event
- South Carolina went 22-7 last season and were ranked as high as No. 2 during the season. The No. 8 seed in the NCAA tournament, the Gamecocks fell 4-1 against Texas in the quarterfinals
- The Gamecocks have been picked to win the SEC title in the preseason coach’s poll
- Virginia leads the all-time series 14-10
- This is only the third meeting between the two teams since 1998. Their last meeting was in the 2022 NCAA Round of 16 in Charlottesville when the Cavaliers logged a 4-0 victory. They also faced one another in the 2019 NCAA Second Round with the Cavaliers winning 4-1
ON THE HORIZON
- The Cavaliers host ITA Kickoff Weekend matches on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27-28
- FAU, Penn and Northern Arizona will play in the Charlottesville Regional with one spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line
- Virginia hosts Northern Arizona on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 12 p.m. FAU and Penn play at 9 a.m.
- The two winners face off on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
