Demya Walker is a Finalist for Kodak All-America Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–DeMya Walker, the leading scorer and rebounder on the 1997-98 University of Virginia women’s basketball team, is one of 48 finalists for the 1998 Division I Kodak Women’s All-America Basketball Team.

The 48 finalists will be considered for selection to the 10-member Kodak All-America team. The finalists were selected by members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in each of the association’s eight districts.

The Division I Kodak All-America Selection Committee will meet March 22-23 in Kansas City, Mo., site of the 1998 WBCA National Convention and the NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four, to select the All-America team. The 38 finalists who are not selected to the All-America team will be recognized as Kodak Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Walker, a junior forward from Mt. Holly, N.J., earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors this season. She is averaging 15.7 points and 8.4 rebounds a game, and ranks second in the nation in blocked shots with 92 (3.4 bpg). She ranks first in the ACC in blocked shots, is third in the conference in field goal percentage (55.1 percent) and rebounding, fourth in scoring and eighth in steals (53, 2.0 spg.).

Walker’s 92 blocked shots this season is a UVa record.

Virginia plays Southern Methodist University in the first round of the NCAA East Region Tournament tonight (March 13) in Tucson, Ariz. The Cavaliers enter the game with an overall record of 18-9.
