Sports Medicine

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Sports Medicine in the Athletics Department is to provide the “Gold Standard” of health care for Division 1 intercollegiate student-athletes. The “Gold Standard” would be exemplified by having NCAA, Olympic and National Sports teams look to us as the best product for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the elite athlete.

The University of Virginia’s sports medicine service, academic and research components are consistent with the University’s intellectual purpose and its exemplary academic standards and traditions. Sports Medicine is an integral part of the commitment to excellence by the athletics department by providing this service to each student-athlete in accordance to the rigorous physical, mental and time demands imposed on them.

The care and interventions will be in compliance to all NCAA, ACC and University rules and regulations.

Dr. Frank McCue

The late Dr. Frank C. McCue, III, provided medical care for University of Virginia athletes for more than 40 years before retiring in 2003. A Cavalier through and through, Dr. McCue completed his undergraduate degree, medical degree, and residency at the University of Virginia. After a hand surgery fellowship in California, Dr. McCue returned to the University in 1961, and began seeing not only Cavalier athletes, but collegiate and high school athletes throughout Virginia, as well as professional athletes and private patients from the Charlottesville community. Dr. McCue earned a reputation for providing the highest quality of healthcare with an uncommon, human touch, frequently allowing his surgical patients to convalesce in his own home under his watchful eye.

Upon his retirement, Dr. McCue was named Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedics. He was the first inductee to the Order of the Crossed Sabres, the Virginia Football Alumni Club’s highest honor. As a measure of their gratitude and respect, the Virginia High School Coaches Association created a sports medicine award which bears his name. In 1988, Dr. McCue’s peers, students, and friends formed the McCue Society, which provides graduate and undergraduate scholarships in the field of Sports Medicine, and for the last 12 years of his career, he worked in a building named in his honor, The Frank C. McCue Center. He passed away in 2012 and was inducted into the Legends’ Walk at Scott Stadium during the first football game that season.
