CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Rob Wright trickled a shot past Duke keeper Alti Knutsson with 12 seconds remaining in regulation play as No. 7 Virginia edged No. 3 Duke 3-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer action here Sunday.

UVa improves to 10-2-2 on the season with the victory and 4-1-1 in ACC play, while the Blue Devils fall to 14-2 and 4-2.

Wright’s goal capped an exciting final 10 minutes, which saw Virginia tie the score 2-2 and then take the eventual win. He had received the pass thanks to a header from the top of the box from Chris Albright.

It was Albright who was responsible for tying the game at the 82:36 mark. The sophomore from Philadelphia put it in from the middle of the box off a pass from Wright. Albright was also in on the other Cavalier goal, assisting Steve Totten on a one-timer at the five-minute mark.

The score remained 1-0 UVa’s way until the 77:41 mark when Duke’s Jay Heaps netted a goal to tie the score. Noah Lewkowitz passed to Heaps from midfield and when the pass sailed over the head of defender Marshall Leonard, Heaps had a one-on-one with Brock Yetso.

Ali Curtis silenced a Klockner Stadium crowd of 3,059 at the 77:41 mark with a goal from the top of the box to put the Devils ahead 2-1.

Wright’s goal was his second game-winning score of the season and just his third total. His assist was the first of his career. Albright’s goal was his 14th on the season, while his two assists brings his season total to three. He now has 25 goals and 10 assists on his career for a total of 60 points.

Virginia will return to action Wednesday when the ‘Hoos host Farleigh-Dickinson at 7:30 p.m. The Cavaliers will be vying for the 500th win in the program’s history, a mark which has not yet been reached by any other ACC school.
