CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team defeated UMBC by the scores of 2-1 and 1-0 to sweep the doubleheader with the Retrievers. Virginia’s pitching duo of Stacey Zagol and Christina Quinn were they keys to the wins.

Zagol started game one for Virginia, striking out eight batters and allowing only three hits through seven innings. Stacy Holmes (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Beth Crimi (2-3, 1 RBI, double) paced the Cavalier offense. Lori Reese (1-2, double) and Meaghan Young (1-3) each added hits for UVa in the win.

Quinn took the mound for Virginia in game two, and picked right up where Zagol left off. She threw a one-hitter while striking out 13 batters in seven innings. Corinne Good (2-4), Mariruth Graham (1-2, double), Young (1-2) and Reese (1-3) all gathered singles for the Cavaliers. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, UMBC pitcher Jean Salkeld balked, allowing UVa’s winning run to score.

Virginia will return to home action on March 6-7, when the Cavaliers host the East Carolina Pirates at The Park. Friday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
