DALLAS, Texas – Virginia’s Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland)pinned both of his opponents in today’s competition, helping the Cavaliersto a pair of wins at the Lone Star Duals against Brown and Wyoming. In theprocess, Roth notched his 19th and 20th career pins, which ties him forfirst-place all-time at Virginia (Howie Miller, 1992-93, 1995-96). Roth isranked ninth in the latest Amateur Wrestling News poll.

In the opener against Wyoming, the Cavaliers won their first matchagainst the Cowboys in two tries, defeating Wyoming 22-17. The Cavalierswere helped with a pair of pins by Roth and Jim Harshaw (CranberryTownship, Pa./Seneca Valley), who moved into third place by himself withhis 19th career pin, one behind Roth and Miller. John Pozniak (StateCollege, Pa./State College) scored a major decision over Mark Hamrick at149, and P. J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) at 141 and Greg Francesca(Union, N.J./Blair Academy) at 157 were also winners in the Wyoming match.

In the second match against Brown, the Cavaliers faced the Bearsfor the fifth consecutive year and broke a two-match losing streak with a21-16 triumph. The Cavaliers reversed the trend of the last two years,faltering down the stretch to the Ivy Leaguers. This time, behind the 20thcareer pin of Roth, the Cavaliers defeated the Bears, going 2-0 in thefirst two matches of the Lone Star Duals. Virginia’s Bory won his secondmatch of the tournament with a come-from behind victory at 8-7 in the 141match, and Pozniak shut out his opponent 7-0 in the 149 bout. Harshaw wonat 165, and John Qualter (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) held on to win 3-2 at174. Frosh Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) scored four pointsin the third period to win 8-2 at 184 to help the Cavalier cause.

With the pair of wins, the Cavaliers improve to 3-0 in the dualmatch season, their best start since 1993 when the Cavaliers won theirfirst five matches. Virginia has one more match this weekend in Dallas asthe Cavaliers will face #15 Oregon State in the nightcap on Saturday night.Virginia will compete in the Virginia Duals this weekend in Norfolk onFriday and Saturday, Jan. 8 and 9.
