WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Former University of Virginia swimmer Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton Alberta) finished second in the 100-meter butterfly at the Pan American Games Monday night (August 3). F. Sanchez of Venezuela won the gold medal in the event with a time of 53.33 seconds and Pietucha, swimming for Canada, took the silver medal with a time of 53.40 seconds.

Pietucha, who graduated from Virginia in May, is scheduled to swim the 200-meter butterfly at the Pan American Games on Friday (August 6).

Pietucha earned All-America honors by winning the 200-yard butterfly at the 1999 NCAA Championships with a school and Atlantic Coast Conference-record time of 1:43.50. He finished 13th in the 100-yard backstroke (48.42 seconds) at the NCAA Meet. Pietucha won the 100-yard butterfly (47.59 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (48.67 seconds) at the 1999 ACC Championships.

UVa swimmer Austin Ramirez (Brookfield, Wisc.) is scheduled to compete for the United States in the 400-meter freestyle on Thursday (August 5).
