CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen has announced the signing of 6-5 forward/guard Maurice Young of Mitchellville, Md., to a national letter of intent with Virginia.

Young averaged 22 points and seven rebounds a game for Bishop McNamara High School as a junior during the 1998-99 season and was one of the top three scorers in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. He was one of Bishop McNamara’s co-captains last season and enters his senior season as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,418 points.

Young was an All-County selection, and was the Most Valuable Player in the Mount Vernon Christmas Tournament and the Bishop McNamara Christmas Tournament last season.

“We’re thrilled to have Maurice Young join our basketball family,” Gillen said. “He’s been extremely well coached by Derek Campbell at Bishop McNamara. Moe’s very versatile with ability to slash to the basket, shoot the three-pointer and go to the offensive glass. He’s a terrific player who will be able to play several positions at the college level.”
