GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 5 Virginia will take on North Carolina State in the first round of the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament held at Wake Forest’s Spry Stadium it was announced here Monday. UV enters the single-elimination event with a 13-2-3 record, while NCSU comes in at 5-12-0.

Virginia will play in the tournament’s second game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The semifinals will be Friday with the championship match Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers earned the second seed in the tournament with a 4-1-1 mark in conference action this fall. The only blemishes on the ACC slate for the Wahoos was a loss at Clemson and a tie at Wake Forest. State, the tournament’s seventh seed, was 0-6 in conference play this fall, including a 4-0 loss to the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. Clemson earned the No. 1 seed and the first-round bye with a 5-1 conference mark. Duke is seeded third, North Carolina fourth, Maryland fifth and Wake Forest sixth. The winner of the Virginia-N.C. State match will face the winner of the Duke-Wake Forest match Friday at 8 p.m. Virginia, which holds a 16-4-3 all-time mark in ACC Tournament play, has reached the tournament finals eight straight years. The Cavaliers have won seven ACC Tournaments with a pair of runner-up finishes. The only ACC team with a winning record against the Wahoos in tournament play is N.C. State at 1-0-1. The tied came in 1988 and UVa advanced 4-2 in penalty kicks en route to its first ACC Tournament title.
