Virginia Football Players Get Nod For ACC Players Of The Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior tailback Thomas Jones was named the ACC Offensive Back ofthe Week while freshman safety Jerton (ger-TAWN) Evans was named the ACCRookie of the Week following Virginia’s 45-40 upset win at #17 BrighamYoung on Sept. 25. Jones tied an ACC record when he posted over 200yardsfor the third time in his career. Evans’ second interception in thegamehalted a furious BYU comeback bid with 1:37 remaining in the game.
Other conference players of the week include Wake Forestoffensivelineman Brian Wolverton, Wake Forest defensive lineman Bryan Ray,Clemsondefensive back Robert Carswell and Florida State receiver/punt returnerPeter Warrick.
OFFENSIVE BACK – Thomas Jones (TB) Virginia
For the second straight week and third time this season, Virginia’sThomasJones has been tabbed as ACC Offensive Back of the Week. A 5-10,207-poundsenior out of Big Stone Gap, Va., Jones rushed for a career-high 210yards,the seventh-highest single game total in Virginia history, in Virginia’s45-40 win at #17 Brigham Young. This was Jones’ third 200-yard game ofhiscareer, tying an ACC record. Jones rushed a career-high 35 timesagainstthe nation’s seventh-ranked defense. Jones had two touchdown runs of 23and45 yards. He also had one reception for seven yards.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN – Brian Wolverton (G) Wake Forest
Wolverton, a 6-5, 310-pound senior guard graded out at 94 percent on theday and helped the Deacon offense to a 314-yard rushing effort in WakeForest’s 31-7 win over 25th-ranked NC State. His play was particularlyimportant as the Deacons had several injuries to other starting linemen,including starting guard Sam Settar and tackles Todd Hollowell andMarlonCurtis.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN – Bryan Ray (DE) Wake Forest
Ray a 6-3, 250-pound junior from Wheaton, Md., had another strong outingfor the Deacons in their 31-7 win over No. 25 NC State. Ray had sixtackles, including five tackles for losses of 26 yards and three sacksofWolfpack quarterback Jamie Barnette for losses of 24 yards. He alsoforcedBarnette to fumble deep in State territory, which set up a 4-yard TDpasson the very next play to give Wake a 14-0 first quarter lead.
DEFENSIVE BACK – Robert Carswell (S) Clemson
Carswell, a 6-0, 208-pound junior had the finest all-around game of histhree-year career in the Tigers’ game at No. 8 Virginia Tech (S23).Carswell had two interceptions inside the Tiger 10-yard line and 16tackles, including eight first hits and eight assists in helping toholdthe Virginia Tech offense to just 17 points, including just three pointsinthe second half. The Hokies scored two defensive touchdowns in the lastthree minutes of play.
SPECIALIST – Peter Warrick (WR) Florida State
Warrick, a 6-0, 195-pound senior from Bradenton, Fla., had an ACC-highof234 all-purpose yards in the Seminoles’ 42-10 win at North Carolina.Warrick had his third 100-yard game of the seasons, catching four passesfor 105 yards. In addition, Warrick ran one time for 16 yards andreturnedthree punts for 115 yards, including a 75-yard first quarter return foratouchdown. Warrick became only the second Seminole ever to reach the3,000-yard receiving mark with 3,024 yards on 166 career catches.
ROOKIE – Jerton Evans (S) Virginia
Evans, a 5-11, 186-pound true freshman, starting at safety against oneofthe nation’s most heralded aerial attacks, had two interceptions inVirginia’s 45-40 win over Brigham Young. Evans’ second interceptioncameon BYU’s final drive of the game which thwarted the Cougars’ comebackbidwith 1:37 left to play. The Lynchburg, Va., product also had two solotackles in the game and played on special teams.
