Virginia's Lane Named ACC Women's Swimmer Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia second-year swimmer Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week after helping lead the Cavaliers to a 150-93 victory over Clemson on Saturday, October 28. Lane won a pair of events and also posted a second-place finish in UVa’s ACC victory.

Lane, who won the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2000 NCAA Championships to become Virginia’s first women’s NCAA swimming champion, won the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle and also finished second in the 200 freestyle against Clemson. Lane bettered the NCAA “B” qualifying standards in all three events. In the 200 butterfly, Lane touched in 2:00.85 and she won the 500 free in 4:47.82. Lane was runner-up to teammate Carlie Dykehouse in the 200 free by .09 seconds with a time of 1:50.35.

Lane was selected as both the ACC Meet and ACC Swimmer of the Year as a freshman in 1999-2000. She was a four-time All-American last year, including three first-team honors.

The victory over Clemson was the 23rd-consecutive dual meet win for 12th-ranked Virginia. The streak dates back to the 1997-98 season. The Cavalier women and the 11th-ranked men return to action on Saturday, November 11 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a 1:00 p.m. meet against the Pittsburgh Panthers.
