CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer players Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) were two of 15 players selected as candidates for the 2001 Missouri Athletic Club’s Men’s Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year award. The M.A.C. award is the official National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas award for Division I players. The winner will be determined in voting by Division I coaches and will be announced in early December.

The 16th winner of the men’s award will be presented with the prestigious crystal ball trophy at the awards banquet on Friday, January 11, 2002 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri. The winner will also be honored at the NSCAA convention in January in Philadelphia, Pa.

The list of men’s candidates are: Alecko Eskandarian (Virginia), Kyle Martino (Virginia), Brad Davis (St. Louis), Mohammed Fahim (Southern Methodist), Chris Gbandi (Connecticut), Gavin Glinton (Bradley), Luchi Gonzalez (Southern Methodist), Lee Morrison (Stanford), Pat Noonan (Indiana), John Barry Nusum (Furman), Oguchi Onyewu (Clemson), Dipsy Selolwane (St. Louis), Mike Tranchilla (Creighton), Ricardo Villar (Penn State) and Alex Yi (UCLA).

Eskandarian, a second-year forward, has started eight of the ten games he has appeared in this season. He has recorded a team-high eight goals resulting in 16 points scored (second on the team). Eskandarian is averaging one goal scored for each game he starts and he leads the team with five game-winning goals scored. He has scored UVa’s first goal on four occasions this season.

Martino, a third-year midfielder, has started all 13 games he has appeared in. He has recorded a team-high 17 points resulting from seven assists and five goals. Martino’s seven assists leads the team and his five goals scored ties teammate Ryan Gibbs for second best on the squad. Martino has recorded two game-winning goals and has posted the Cavaliers first goal in three games this year.

Eskandarian and Martino are also candidates for the 2001 Hermann Trophy Award.
