CLOVIS, Calif. – Virginia swimmers earned five top 10 finishes in the final two days of competition at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Swimming Championships Friday and Saturday (August 17 and 18). In addition, second-years Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) have been selected to the United States’ 2001 Goodwill Games team. The Goodwill Games will take place in Brisbane, Australia, August 29-September 3. Anderson was selected to the Goodwill Games team after his sixth-place finish in the 100 free, while Wagner earned his spot on the team by virtue of his third-place performance in the 200 backstroke.

Third-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) posted the top finish among UVa swimmers in the final two days of competition by placing fourth in the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:37.22. Second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) was ninth in the 1500 free with a time of 15:44.89. Prichard was also seventh in the finals 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:58.36, while DeMarco was 36th in the 400 free (4:03.45).

Anderson finished sixth in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.33, while Wagner recorded UVa’s other top 10 finish by placing eighth in the 100-meter backstroke in 57.33. Second-year Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was 21st in the 50 free with a time of 23.60. Haag was also 38th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.00. Fourth-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) finished 29th in the 100 back (58.96). Mousetis was also 23rd in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:07.93.

In addition to Prichard and DeMarco, the Cavaliers’ had two other competitors in the 400 freestyle. Third-year Michael Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonogh) was 43rd (4:05.24), while third-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) was 47th (4:06.09). In the 100-meter breaststroke, third-year Jonathan Baird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) was 21st in the “C” final with a time of 1:06.06. Second-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) was 26th in the prelims of the 100 breast in 1:06.02. Second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and UVa assistant coach Doak Finch were 21st and 22nd in the 100-meter butterfly. Kerpelman edged Finch by one one-hundredth of a second with a time of 55.61 to Finch’s 55.62.

The Virginia women’s swimming team was represented at the Phillips 66 National Championships by a second-year swimmers Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep). Baly finished 21st in the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 17:02.41 and was also 27th in the 400-meter free with a time of 4:21.72. Dykehouse finished 35th in the 400 free with a time of 4:22.92.
