CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia men’s tennis first-year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) was named Rookie of the Year for the Mideast Region this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Stewart, along the honorees from the ITA’s other seven regions, are finalists for the ITA National Rookie of the Year award that will be presented next week.

Stewart has made an immediate impact for the Cavaliers in his first year. He has a 27-7 record in singles, including a 21-4 mark at the No. 1 position in dual matches. He is currently ranked No. 46 in the nation. Last month, Stewart was named as an All-ACC honoree and honored as the conference’s Rookie of the Year. In doubles, Stewart and fourth-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted a 16-7 record and are currently ranked No. 23 in the nation.

“Doug has had a great first year and has brought a lot to this program,” stated Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “He deserves to be recognized for his accomplishments. He has shown great maturity and work ethic for a first year and it will be exciting to see him develop into an even better player in the future.”

Stewart will travel to Athens, Ga. next week for the NCAA Individual Championships. He is one of only six freshmen in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship field. Stewart and Duquette will also compete in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship. Stewart is one of only two freshmen in the nation to compete in both this year’s singles and doubles championships.
