CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action this weekend (May 17-18) at the Central/South Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Preliminary competition is scheduled for Saturday (May 17) and the finals for Sunday (May 18) on Melton Hill Lake. Competition each day is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Virginia crews will compete in the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the first varsity four, the first novice eight and the second novice eight at the Central/South Region Sprints. The Cavaliers have not competed since rowing against Radcliffe, Yale and Texas in Cambridge, Mass., on April 26.

Virginia has not competed in the Central/South Region Sprints since 1998. UVa won the team competition at the Central/South Region Sprints in 1998 and 1997.

The Cavaliers’ first varsity eight is currently ranked 12th in the nation in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Coaches Poll. Several other ranked first varsity eight crews are scheduled to compete in the Central/South Region Sprints including Michigan (7th), Ohio State (10th), Michigan State (11th), Iowa (15th), Texas (17th) and Tennessee (19th).
