#15 Virginia Falls Again To #4 Miami As Hurricanes Roll To 22-3 Victory

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The #15 ranked University of Virginia baseball team suffered a 22-3 loss against the #4 ranked Miami Hurricanes in the second contest of a three-game non-conference series at Mark Light Field. Miami scored six first-inning runs and rolled to a 19-run victory, handing Virginia its worst loss of the season. The Cavaliers uncharacteristically committed seven errors in the contest which didn’t help matters, but the Hurricanes also pounded out 25 hits to UVa’s eight to post the victory. Miami also won 8-0 on Friday in game one of the series.
Miami came out of the gates and wasted no time establishing a lead after plating six runs (five unearned) to take an early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Hurricanes’ six-run scoring burst was aided by two Cavalier errors. UM used a two-run RBI-triple by Richard Giannotti and a pair of one-run RBI-singles by Joey Hooft and Jon Jay to drive in four of its six runs in the side.
The Hurricanes extended their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning by scoring two more runs. Miami’s Jim Burt tripled to left-center and then scored a run on a sacrifice fly to right field by Brian Barton before Gaby Sanchez reached base on a UVa error before scoring a run two batters later on a RBI-single by Erick San Pedro.
The Cavaliers finally got on the scoreboard for the first time all series and made it an 8-1 contest in the top of the fourth inning when Mark Reynolds singled before scoring a run one batter later on a RBI-double to left-center field by teammate Ryan Zimmerman.
Miami extended its lead to 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Miami’s Sanchez hit a solo home run to left field to give UM a 9-1 lead before San Pedro followed with a two-run home run to left field two batters later to make it an 11-1 contest. The Hurricanes added another run on Virginia’s fifth error of the game to take a 12-1 lead after four innings of play.
UVa cut UM’s lead to 12-2 when Scott Headd singled to lead off the side in the top of the fifth inning before he scored a run from third base on a double play ground-out by Tim Henry. But the Hurricanes answered right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning and regained their 11-run advantage by tacking on another run on a RBI-single to left field by San Pedro.
Miami kept the runs coming and made it a 15-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Burt and Sanchez each recorded a RBI-single to give the Hurricanes a 13-run advantage. The Cavaliers chipped into Miami’s lead in the top of the seventh inning and made the score 15-3 when Kyle Werman was hit by a pitch and scored a run from third base two batters later on a sacrifice fly to center field by Matt Street.
However, that would be Virginia’s last run of the game, and Miami extended its lead to 17-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brendan Katin cranked a two-run home run to left field over the scoreboard to give the Hurricanes a 14-run cushion. UM wasn’t finished there as it scored five more runs in the top of the eighth inning to stretch its lead to 22-3. Three of the runs came off of a three-run home run to deep left field by Giannotti.
UVa starting pitcher Matt Avery (4-2) took the loss and only lasted 2.0 innings and allowed eight runs (just two earned) on seven hits and struck out one batter. Miami starting pitcher Cesar Carrillo (7-0) picked up the win after going 5.0 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 34-9 overall. The victory improves Miami’s record to 30-8 on the season. The win secures the series for the Hurricanes as they take a two games to none lead over the Cavaliers. The loss was UVa’s first back-to-back defeat since falling to N.C. State back on March 27th and 28th earlier this season. Virginia is now 7-for-10 in its 10 three-game series this season.
The Cavaliers and Hurricanes will return to action on Sunday, April 25th when the two teams play the third and final contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Mark Light Stadium.
