VIRGINIA COACH Pete Gillen

“We haven’t played in 15 days and it showed tonight. I give Loyola Marymount a lot of credit, they are well-coached team and very good; better than last year’s team.”

“We were banged up tonight and not in great game shape.”

“A very fortunate win for us tonight. J.R. Reynolds had the guts and courage to make a drive and he made a big play to win it for us. Our kids showed a lot of courage tonight and made enough plays to win. It wasn’t artistic, but it’s a win.”

“At the end of the overtime, they trapped us and doubled Sean {Singletary}, we skipped it and got it to J.R. on the left wing, and he had the courage to drive to the basket and made the shot.”

“We need to expand our bench. Donte Minter did a good job today and Tunji Soroye made two free-throws and that was a bonus. Tunji is still learning the game, but he did some good things tonight.”

“We work on end-of-game situations at practice. J.R.’s floater was not a set play, it was a scramble. We are telling him to drive to the basket more and tonight he did and made a heck of a shot.”

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT HEAD COACH STEVE AGGERS

“This was great college basketball game and I’m proud of our team. I thought we played very hard tonight in a very hostile environment. I like how we managed the game and controlled the tempo for the most part.”

“We could have won in regulation, but we uncharacteristically missed a key one-and-one and then took a bad shot.”

“I thought we did an excellent job on Elton Brown. He’s very hard to guard and I thought we spread his points out.”

“The difference in the game was our 20 turnovers. We out-rebounded them by 10, but we fouled too much, but the turnovers killed us. The dribble penetration hurt us the whole night. They are very hard to guard on the perimeter, as they are very athletic and quick.”

“The last six minutes was really a blessing in disguise for them. They had to go to a four-guard lineup with the injuries to their big guys made them very quick and athletic. I don’t think they would have been able to pressure us as well with that big lineup.”

“We mishandled the last 1.5 seconds. We should have called a timeout the minute they scored and ran a set play with 1.5 seconds. In that loud arena, the referees aren’t going to hear me call a timeout and our guys maybe froze and didn’t call a timeout.”
