A look at the people behind the scenes who are pertinent to Virginia football’s success

by Cathy Bongiovi
Assistant Director, UVa Athletics Media Relations

Title: Administrative Assistant to Coach Al Groh
Years at UVa: Nine
Education: Radford University
Family: Daughter Ashley (20), son Jeremy (18)

Responsibilities: I’m responsible for taking care of Al Groh. Whether that means typing correspondence or his game plan, scheduling interviews and appointments, or running to the store to get a particular type of paper that he likes to use– whatever it takes to make his day run more smoothly. I also handle team travel, oversee the budget, and do mountains of mail and paperwork. In recent years this job has evolved with the times; now we host the recruits on game days, giving tours, sitting with them and their parents, and answering questions about what it’s like to be a UVa student and sometimes even what’s it like to work everyday with Coach Groh.

Favorite part of the job: My favorite part of the job would have to be the people and the players I am so privileged to work with. Plus, my kids are convinced that I have the `coolest job in the world’.

Least favorite part of the job: It would have to be working holidays. Before coming to Virginia Football, I didn’t know how many people worked so hard to make those bowl games that we all enjoy watching happen. But I know it now!

Memorable UVa highlight: The most memorable event was the opportunity to meet the four New York City firefighters we invited to C-ville for the Duke game in 2001 following 9/11. As for football, last season I saw Wali Lundy score a touchdown right in front of me. That’s something I’ll never forget. Winning the Continental Tire Bowl when we beat West Virginia was the sweetest victory. We were the underdogs–we just didn’t win–we totally dominated. It was just a great game for the whole team.

Legacy to Virginia football gameday: It would have to be the `First Down’ chant. I don’t know if we can take official credit on this, but Sharon McCauley and I definitely pestered the right people so that the fans would do it. And it just took off!

You’re named the head coach for one season. What’s the first thing you’d do?: Make sure I had an unending supply of coffee–I don’t think I would have time to sleep! Then I’d give my secretary a raise.

One thing I want to do: I want to run out of the tunnel with the team through the smoke.

Favorite play: Hook and ladder. So we get to hear Mac McDonald yell, `HOOK AND LADDDER! HOOK AND LADDER!’

What is the best part of working with Al Groh: The best part of working with Al Groh is his energy. It’s kind of contagious. Plus, he’s got a great sense of humor.

Which bowl game would you like UVa to play in this year?: The national championship.

Favorite pro team: I was raised a Redskins girl, but now with so many of our players spread across the country, I wear many different hats. I cheer for our guys wherever they play.

Describe your ideal day: It always starts with a good cup of coffee, visiting with friends, having a little time to myself with a good book and perhaps a pedicure…essentially a lot of relaxation.

Hobbies: I really enjoy home projects. And, of course, I love to shop. Traveling, whether to the beach or mountains, is always tops on my list. Fortunately, watching football with family or friends has always been a favorite of mine, too!
