The Virginia field hockey team outcornered the No. 9 Boston College Eagles, but it was BC who got on the board and defeated the Cavaliers 1-0 tonight in Newton, Mass. The Eagles (7-2) scored on their first shot of the game, just 1:06 into the contest, to take a lead that would stand up through the next 69 minutes of play. The Cavaliers (7-2) drew six corners to BC’s four, and Katherine Blair notched six saves to keep the Hoos within striking distance.

A free hit up the right side of the pitch was laid on to the top of the circle where Bob Dirks rocketed a shot to the boards in the second minute of play, giving BC the advantage. At halftime, the Eagles held the 1-0 lead despite short corners being even at one each and BC’s having a slight advantage in shots 3-2.

Early in the second half a tipped ball got behind the Virginia defense and BC’s Caitlin Young got off a shot that sailed towards an empty cage, but Biffy Cornelison was there to knock it out of danger for the Cavaliers, keeping Virginia within one. The Cavaliers drew five corners in the second half and did not allow the Eagles a corner until the final five minutes of the contest. Virginia turned all of them aside but were unable to find the boards themselves.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday as they face the Terriers of Boston University, Game time is 1:00 in Cambridge, Mass.
