The University of Virginia women’s rowing team finished first in the varsity eight and novice eight competitions on Sunday, November 12, at the Rivanna Romp. The regatta, held at the Rivanna Reservoir, was the Cavaliers’ final competition of the fall season. The Cavaliers hosted 11 teams at the regatta.

After a restart due to a timing glitch, the Cavaliers’ “A” boat won the varsity eight competition with a time of 13:12.43. Ohio State’s “A” boat finished second (13:27.05), followed by the Tennessee “A” boat in third (13:29.57) and the Minnesota “A” boat in fourth (13:29.62). Additionally, the Cavaliers’ “B” boat finished fifth (13:44.86), UVa’s “C” crew came in eighth (13:48.63), and the Virginia “D” boat placed twentieth (14:25.29). Twenty-nine boats raced in the event.

Virginia’s “A” boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Jenny Cromwell, Kerry Maher, Libby McCann, Heather Gardner, Lauren Hutchins, Yvonne Epp, Chrissie Monaghan, and Melanie Kok.

“After the timing glitch, I was very impressed by the coaches and athletes who came out and raced again. I was also very pleased with how we did,” said head coach Kevin Sauer. “We did have a time for the first run and were only two seconds slower the second time around. It was a great way to end fall competition.”

The Cavaliers’ “A” boat won the novice eight competition with a time of 14:03.04. Clemson finished second (15:05.08), followed by Georgetown in third (15:24.25), Tennessee in fourth (15:25.82), and the Virginia “B” boat in fifth (15:43.15). Eight boats participated in the race.

Ashley Dowd (coxswain), Summers Nelson, Helen Tompkins, Marie Long, Hannah Jordan-Squires, Shalane Carlson, Frosty Baylor, Nora Phillips, and Megan Wardius manned the novice eight boat.

The women’s small boats competition was canceled due to time constraints caused by the timing glitch.

The Cavaliers will resume competition in the spring when Virginia scrimmages Michigan State on March 10 in Marlon, Va.
