Cavalier Baseball Defeats Wake Forest 13-5

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – David Adams (Margate, Fla.) went 5-for-6 with 4 RBI to lead Virginia to a 13-5 win at Wake Forest Saturday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Cavalier win evens the weekend series at a game a piece, and brings the Cavaliers’ record to 16-2 on the season (1-1 ACC). The Demon Deacons fall to 10-5 (1-1 ACC).
“It was good to see us bounce back after the loss yesterday,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “The first five innings were, offensively, the best five innings we have had all season, Wake is a good team and we look forward to tomorrow with a chance to win the series.”
In addition to Adams, the Cavaliers were led offensively by Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.), who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.), who went 3-for-6. Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) had three RBIs and Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) scored three runs.
Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) picked up the win, improving to 5-0 on the season. Alex Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) combined to pitch 3.2 innings of shutout relief. Eric Niesen (2-1) took the loss for the Demon Deacons.
Virginia took the early lead with a run in the top of the first. Miclat led off the game with a walk. He moved to second on a groundout and eventually scored on Adams’ RBI single with two outs.
The Cavaliers took advantage of a leadoff walk again in the second inning. Wingfield led off with a free pass. With one out, an error by the second baseman allowed Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) to reach and Wingfield advance to second. Miclat’s single up the middle drove in Wingfield for the second Cavalier run of the game. After Mitchell and Miclat successfully completed a double steal, Marsh hit a groundball to first, but the throw home was too late to catch Mitchell, who’s run made the score 3-0. Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) followed with an infield single that plated Miclat and Adams singled home Marsh, to make the score 5-0.
In the top of the fifth, Virginia added seven runs to make the score 12-0. Guyer led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.). Wingfield drove in Guyer with a double down the right field line and Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) drove in Wingfield with a double down the left field line. Mitchell’s single scored Cannon for the third run of the inning. After Miclat walked, a wild pitch moved Mitchell to third and Miclat to second. Marsh’s single through the left side scored both runners to make the score 10-0. An error on Doolittle’s fly ball to left put runners on second and third, both of which scored on Adams’ single into left.
Wake Forest got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. With one out, Eric Williams, Nathan Frazier, and Brett Linnenkohl hit three consecutive singles, to score Williams. Austin Jones followed with a three-run home run to cut the UVa lead to 12-4.
The Demon Deacons added a run in the bottom of the sixth, to make the score 12-5. Evan Ocheltree drew a one-out walk. Tyler Smith’s double moved him to third and he scored on an RBI groundout by Williams.
Virginia tacked on one final run in the top of the ninth. Adams had a one-out single that was followed by a single by Guyer. Later in the inning, Wingfield’s single up the middle scored Adams.
Virginia’s 18 hits tied the team’s season high, set on February 17 in the 11-0 win over George Washington.
The series will conclude on Sunday with game three between the Cavaliers and Demon Deacons. Matt Packer (2-0, 2.57 ERA) is scheduled to start for Virginia, while Garrett Bullock (1-0, 5.74 ERA) will start for Wake Forest. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
