No. 5 Virginia Baseball Knocks Off Virginia Tech, 11-4

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team rung up 17 hits in posting an 11-4 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday at English Field in Blacksburg, Va. Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) had four hits, while Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) and Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) each notched three hits.
The win clinches a series victory for the Cavaliers and provides Virginia another point in the Commonwealth Challenge. Virginia now holds a 13.5-5.5 advantage over Virginia Tech in the challenge.
Andrew Carraway (Marietta, Ga.) pitched five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and move to 4-0 on the season. He allowed just two hits and a walk over his five innings. He also struck out four. Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) started on the mound for Virginia and went four innings, giving up four runs (two earned), six hits and a walk while fanning three.
Andrew Wells (2-2) started and took the loss for Virginia Tech. He tossed five innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned), 13 hits and three walks and striking out three.
The bottom third of the Virginia batting order – Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.), Cannon and Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) was solid at the plate, going 6-for-13 with seven runs scored and three runs batted in.
Just like Friday, the Cavaliers put together a three-run second inning to open the scoring. With one out and Wingfield on first base, Virginia strung together four-consecutive hits – an RBI double from Cannon, a single from Mitchell, an RBI single from Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) and a run-scoring single from Marsh.
Virginia doubled its lead in the third inning, and doing all of its damage with two outs. Wingfield was hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count, and Cannon hit the next pitch into center field for a single. Mitchell then singled to plate Wingfield. After Miclat coaxed a walk to load the bases, Marsh singled to right to bring home Cannon and Mitchell and push the lead to 6-0.
Virginia Tech scored two unearned runs in the third inning on a Bryan Thomas home run, but Virginia matched it with two in the fourth. Guyer singled with one out to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games. With two outs, Wingfield doubled to the left-center field gap to score Guyer. Cannon then singled to move Wingfield to third. The `Hoos then scored on some trickery, as Cannon took off for second on a stolen base attempt. He stopped as the throw went down to second, and Wingfield came to the plate. The Hokies chose to catch Cannon in a rundown, but Wingfield scored before the out was made, and Virginia pushed the lead to 8-2.
The Hokies tacked on two runs in their half of the fourth, scoring on a Anthony Sosnoskie single and a passed ball by Virginia catcher Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.)
Virginia scored a run in the fifth on a Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) single that scored Marsh. Guyer homered to left field to lead off the eighth inning and Doolittle added another RBI single in the ninth to push the final margin to 11-4.
Virginia and Virginia Tech wrap up their series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
