CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 3 Virginia men’s team remained unbeaten in ACC play with a 5-2 victory over No. 37 Miami Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 20-3 overall and 8-0 in the conference while the Hurricanes fall to 9-10, 4-4 in the ACC.

With the victory, the Cavaliers reach the 20-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season. That streak is a new school record, breaking the mark of four consecutive 20-win seasons from 1981-84.

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the three doubles contests. The No. 2 ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) scored an 8-5 win over No. 8 Josh Cohen and Luigi D’Agord at No. 1 doubles, handing the Hurricane duo their first loss in conference play. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-6 win over Nector Nieto and J.C. Whitner at No. 3 doubles. At the No. 2 position, Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) defeated Vivek Subramanian and Daniel Vallverdu 9-8 to remain undefeated in ACC play.

In singles, the Cavalier lead was extended to 2-0 as Vallverdu retired in his match with Huey, who was leading 6-1 in the first set. Singer downed Barnabas Carrega 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position to make the score 3-0 in favor of Virginia. Inglot clinched the match for Virginia with his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Josh Cohen at the No. 3 position. Barrick added to the advantage with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Whitner at No. 5 singles. The Hurricanes won the final two matches on the courts. In a battle of the two undefeated players at No. 1 singles in ACC play, D’Agord topped Devvarman 6-4, 7-6. At No. 4 singles, Subramanian defeated Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) in a superbreaker.

Virginia closes out the road portion of its 2007 schedule on Sunday when it visits No. 25 Florida State. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
