Wigger Finishes Eighth at Bryan National Collegiate

Browns Summitt, NC – In the final match of the season before the ACC Championships, the 19th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished 10th at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. with a score of 923. The Cavaliers were led by the eighth-place finish of senior Leah Wigger, who recorded the 22nd top-10 finish of her career. Virginia played the tournament short-handed when sophomore Jennie Arseneault had to pull out prior to the opening round due to a sore back. She is ranked 34th in the nation in the latest Golfweek standings.
Wigger shot 1-over 73 Sunday to complete the 54-hole tournament at 4-over 220. Here performance marked the sixth time in eight tournaments this year she has led the Cavaliers in scoring. It was her fifth top-10 finish this season.
Rachel Smith was Virginia’s second finisher in 32nd place at 230. She shot 76 on Sunday. Kristen Simpson carded a 77 during the final round and was 47th at 234. Sally Shonk, playing in the UVa lineup for the first time this year, was 68th at 239, including a 78 Sunday. Whitney Neuhauser was 73rd at 242. She shot 80 over the final 18 holes. Carly Truitt, playing as a non-scorer, was also 73rd at 242.
Purdue posted the best final-round score, a 6-over 294, to move past No. 12 Florida and No. 20 North Carolina to take home the championship trophy. The No. 15 Boilermakers finished at 887, seven shots ahead of Florida and 10 strokes better than North Carolina. The Tar Heels were one shot ahead of second-ranked Duke.
Purdue’s Maria Hernandez took medalist honors at 1-under 215. She defeated Florida’s Sandra Gal in a three-hole playoff for the title.
Virginia will compete at the ACC Championships April 13-15 at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte.
