REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 13 Virginia women’s rowing team swept all seven races during the first day of action at the Windermere Real Estate Classic on Saturday at Redwood Shores.

“There were really challenging conditions today,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I thought we handled them well. I’m very pleased with the results so far.”

Against No. 8 UCLA in the morning’s competition, UVa swept all three events. In the varsity eight, UVa captured a two-second upset victory, winning in 6:58.53. In the second varsity eight, the Cavaliers picked up a 15-second win in 6:59.96. In the varsity four event, the `Hoos won in 7:37.86 in open water.

In the afternoon against No. 19 Washington, the No. 13 Virginia varsity eight claimed its second win on the day, knocking off the Huskies in 7:08.19. The UVa second varsity eight finished 15 seconds ahead of Washington in 7:27.09. Virginia also won in 7:55.93 in the varsity four.

In the team’s final event of the day, UVa’s novice eight claimed a 27-second win against No. 5 California, winning in 7:14.07.

Action continues on Sunday, April 15 at the Windermere Real Estate Classic. Virginia faces No. 14 Washington State in three events, beginning at 9:16 a.m. PDT.
