No. 3 Virginia Baseball Falls in 14-Inning Marathon to JMU

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 3 Virginia baseball team dropped a 7-6, 14-inning contest against James Madison Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 1,714 on `Turn Back the Clock Night’ at Davenport Field. The four-hour, 39-minute marathon marked the longest contest in the five-year history of Davenport Field.
James Madison (17-25) scored five runs in the top of the 14th inning, then hung on as the Cavaliers (34-10) scored four in the bottom of the 14th and left runners on second and third as Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) hit a long fly to left field to end things.
“We battled back in the bottom of the 14th and showed what we were made of,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “I wish we would have showed that effort the first nine innings and the result could have been different. I tip my cap to JMU for playing a great game.”
JMU scored five in the 14th inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Rob Altieri and a three-run homer by Mitchell Moses, his second homer of the night.
Virginia scored four in its half of the 14th, as Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) hit an RBI single and Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) grounded out to score a run. Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) followed with an RBI single and David Adams (Margate, Fla.) added an RBI single to produce the final Cavalier run.
Neal Davis (Baltimore, Md.) surrendered five runs in his two innings of relief to take the loss and fall to 2-1 on the year. Virginia pitcher Pat McAnaney (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a solid start for the Cavaliers, allowing just one run, five hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings. UVa pitchers combined to strike out 20 batters.
Justin Wood (3-5) earned the win for James Madison with five innings of relief. JMU starter Trevor Kaylid kept the Cavaliers off balance all night, going 6 1/3 innings while allowing one earned run, six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Scaglione singled with one out and scored an out later on a triple to right field by Cannon.
James Madison (16-25) tied the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mike Fabiaschi, then moved in front in the sixth inning on a home run by Moses.
The Cavaliers came within a few feet of taking the lead in the eighth inning, as Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) lifted a long fly ball to left field with Adams on and two out, but Moses caught it at the wall for the final out of the inning.
Virginia got the tying run in the following inning off JMU closer Bobby Lasko. Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) led off with a pinch-hit single and promptly stole second base. After Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) sacrificed Henry to third, Cannon launched a fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly.
Virginia remains home this weekend, playing host to Maryland in a three-game ACC series. First pitch on Friday night is at 7 p.m.
