CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ryan Hurley, a fourth-year member of the Virginia swimming team, placed second in the 200 meter breaststroke Thursday at the 2007 World University Games. Hurley, who is representing the United States, finished in a time of 2:13.24. The event, which is being held in Bangkok, Thailand, commenced Wednesday and runs through Aug. 18.

Grigory Falko of Russia won gold, finishing with a mark of 2:12.89. The 2007 NCAA champion in the event, Vladislav Polyakov of Kazakhstan, took the bronze.

“Everyone associated with the swimming program at Virginia is thrilled with Ryan’s success in Thailand,” Virginia mentor Mark Bernardino said. “He had a wonderful summer of training and has worked extremely hard. En route to the silver, Ryan defeated the reigning NCAA champion (Alabama’s Polyakov) along with many other talented swimmers.”

Hurley served as a team captain as a third-year for the Cavaliers in 2006-07 and competed in the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke events at the 2007 NCAA Championships in March.

The objective of the 24th World University Games is to provide opportunities for university students from all over the world, especially athletes aged 17-28, to compete equally in the Games with their powerful sprit, devotion and goodwill.

Virginia teammate Pat Mellors also is representing the U.S. at the event. Mellors is slated to compete Aug. 13 in the 400 individual medley.
