CHARLOTTESVILLE After leading the top-ranked Cavalier men’s tennis team to the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. The senior went 3-0 in singles and 4-0 doubles on the week to earn the honor.

The honor is the sixth of Devvarman’s career and the second by a Cavalier this season. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) was honored on Jan. 29. Last year, Devvarman led the conference with four ACC Player of the Week selections.

Last week, Devvarman led Virginia to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, the first men’s tennis team national championship in ACC History. In the Cavaliers’ 4-3 win over UCLA in the quarterfinals, Devvarman clinched the match with his three-set win over Harel Srugo. A day later, Devvarman clinched the 4-2 semifinal win over Ole Miss, defeating Erling Tveit in three sets. On Monday, he topped Justin Kronauge 6-1, 6-3 in the Cavaliers’ 4-1 win over Ohio State in the final.

Devvarman extended his singles winning streak to 13 matches and is 21-1 overall this season. He has also teamed with Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) for a 21-1 doubles record.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday as they host a doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia will play Old Dominion at 1 p.m. and host Boston College in its ACC opener at 6 p.m. Admission to both matches is free.
